Roughly 416 inches is what you have! Not too bad for a robo, but of course if more space becomes necessary you can definitely upgrade later It wouldn't need to be much more space, but the best way to visualize exactly how much extra it would take to get in that equation it's only 100 square inches under, but that does depend on just how big your hamster is and if that extra space would benefit her once she is more confident.

I don't think you would need to go much bigger but so much depends on how Rosie's character develops, if she does become more confident she might enjoy a larger cage or even if she just likes to dig lots of burrows underground a bigger cage would give more opportunity for that although you may need lots of hideouts to help her feel secure above ground if that's the case.
I find it really hard to think in sq cm tbh! But as an example of a larger cage that should be plenty big enough for most robos (there's always the exception) I worked out the Kerry (75x45cm) is 3375 sq cm.
I really do think the best thing is to get to know your ham really well & then you will have a better idea of what she will or won't be comfortable with, until then it's all just guess work really.

There are a few options around that size range It is a bit hard to find much, but there are definitely some good options and even cost effective options too!

Small Animal Habitat Jumbo 3 Shelf A bit expensive and could be bulky, but similar to the Kerry idea but slightly smaller.
Cage Duna Large Fun Not as expensive but the tubes can be an issue for some hamsters.
Cage Duna Multy This one is the cheapest of all,but still a very good size for a robo if they're not too nervous.

Thats great. I have a few options when she becomes more confident. Im not sure a bigger cage would suit Daisy as shes always been nervous. If she sees me she disappears into one of her tunnels. Plus i think her cage is slightly bigger and she has levels which i think count. A kerry is definitely bigger as my sister has one but i gather very heavy! I will look at the other two so i know what they look like (at least online!). Rosie digs lots of tunnels and used to come out at night. I have seen her out a few times but earlier and she has started to go on her wheel a little which is good. At night i dont see her at all though so i will wait till this happens becore considering any sort of a change. I will be cleaning her in a weeks time as a month will be up. Hopefully her confidence will get better then (providing i dont scare her more). Its Daisys turn this week so i will do half a cage as suggested. Hopefully neither will find this way stressful.

The Kerry is very heavy! I had one but it was too difficult for me to manage, maybe not a particularly good cage for a robo, I was trying to give an indication of size rather than suggest you use that one, just happened to have the sq cm to hand!
Definitely sounds as though Rosie is beginning to get her confidence back now.

Thanks i d its definatly worth knowing all the pros and cons of these cages before i decide on one if Rosie needs one. Weight may well be a factor when it comes to it! I only mentioned the kerry instead of the others as id actually seen it. I just wish Rosie would go on her wheel all night like she used to then I'd know shes ok. Daisys more running on the wheel all night and it is lovely to see/hear her. She was much more nervous than Rosie but now Rosie is more nervous. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait for her confidence to return! I just want that to be quick for her sake (as well as mine - i used to love her jumping on my hand for food.) I gave her some veg today and as soon as she saw me she dissapeared behind her house. Would it be worth putting the tissues in again?

Levels don't count unfortunately They're useful for humans though,as long as they're of a suitable material. They can lift up food bowls and sand baths and similar things to allow for more burrowing space, but they don't in any way change how big a cage is.

If Daisy is a a bit on the smaller side for a robo then technically the equation doesn't apply,so keep that in mind as well as the obvious that it isn't set in stone and is merely a very random equation that can be interesting to at least think about

For light cages, definitely avoid anything made of glass. With that in mind you've ruled out a used fish tank or something like the Kerry, but you can definitely still look for used acrylic aquariums or cheaper acrylic aquariums along with something like a Duna Multy which is from what I recall polycarbonate. This is a stronger and more expensive material than acrylic, but acrylic is just fine if a tank is preferable.Still the Duna Multy is fairly cheap, but give it time and weigh out the pros and cons of every single thing.

As a side note on acrylic aquariums,be wary if it is ever mentioned that there is sealant in an acrylic aquarium.Acrylic aquariums are bonded on a molecular level, not sealed together like glass aquariums, because sealant doesn't work well with acrylic and will just fall apart especially in anything but the tiniest pieces.

I think it would be worth doing the tissue trick again, I've done that with more nervous hams whenever I think it may be needed not just when they first come home & it certainly won't do any harm, try doing it daily for a few days or a week even.
Probably a silly question but have you checked her wheel is still working ok & not stiff at all?

I too think you should try the tissue trick again, it has worked wonders for me.

Thanks everyone. Well im trying the tissue trick again hoping she may be out at night a bit more. I havent seen her at all at night but the food vanishes so she must come out to collect it. I have checked the wheel but it did take me a few weeks to think about it. It did need an oil which i did but shes still not touched it. Ive even put seeds on there to give her the idea it works! The seeds disappear but Rosies still not using it. Daisys cage is a handmade acrylic one 78 cm by 30 cm its very tall as it was made as a plit cage to introduce 2 sets of gerbils. This was handy when i had to split them. She has tons of bedding (approx40litres ) so makes lots of tunnels. I think both Rosie and Daisy are about 2 1/2 cm long. Is that small or normal for a robo? Seeing as they are the only ones ive had im not sure. Rosie is out now eating her whimzee but she will disappear once shes done this (unless food is out which she will collect first). Is it likely she will never go bavk out at night? Thanks
