Unhappy Packing her bags!

Hello,

The other day Alice, my female syrian escaped her cage during the night and I found her in the morning behind the fridge, took me half an hour to took her out cuz I didn't want to hurt her.. Since then she's been pouching her cheeks and trying to escape again, like she's is packing her bags and trying to move to the fridge again. She has been chewing her litter tray and the bars and the connections for the tubes. What can I do?
Her cage is small for her but has two floors and has much toilet rolls and chews has I could feet, her new cage comes in a week or two is a 100x50x50cm terrarium and lots of thing for her to play. But I'm scared that she hurts herself trying to escaped with her cheeks pouched and chewing the plastics of.. Please help me...

Can you get a ceramic bowl to use as a litter tray instead? That is one way to solve at least part of the issue for now,but in general replacing plastic items or removing them is the best you can do.Keep in mind she still might not be entirely happy even with the 100 x 50 cage.

When she gets the new cage, watch for any odd and continuous behavior such as chewing at sealant, corner digging, pacing, jumping at walls etc.If these behaviors continue even when your hamster is settled into a new cage,it can definitely be a good indicator of boredom and therefore a need to get an even bigger cage.

I think your new cage sounds a really lovely size, huge in fact and will be more than big enough. Lots of room for enrichment and being a terrarium means you can out deep substrate in for digging.

As far as I know, it's not uncommon for them to try and return somewhere they've been. She'll have scented it and is probably thinking "I'm sure I left a stash there". A lot of hamsters look like they're trying to get away as they are just generally a curious animal. They're also pretty smart so she's probably just trying to replicate his she got out before. She's also probably a bit unsettled after her ordeal so she may take a a little while to settle down. Please don't beat yourself up about it.

As for the chewing things they shouldn't, it can sometimes hurt their teeth. Some people have found that the hams have broken a tooth or bent one out of shape chewing on bars. Not every ham but if it happens it can cause them problems. Of she's chewing one or two particular areas on the bars, some members have found threading card through the bars helpful for their hams to chew on.
Is she interested in wood chews? Some hams aren't very so you could try a dog biscuit in with the wood chews? Whimzees seem popular with a lot of hams. They are a vegetable based chew. I also, give as an occasional treat a dog biscuit like a pedigree biscrok but as my Syrians try and pouch the whole thing they get half. Check ingredients though as there should be no garlic or onions.

I'm sure Alice will be fine. And of course, you have the fun but now of planning her new cage setup

Bar chewing and other behaviour are not always linked to boredom or needing a bigger cage.

It could be a desire to come out of the cage and explore, illness or the setup of the cage, water bottle not working or wheel not big enough/not spinning freely. So it is possible by checking these things and adjusting the setup to reduce/stop unwanted behaviour.

Your new cage is a good size and is likely to be enjoyed by your hamster.
