Please help- i don't know what to do!

My robos, Hamlet and Wilson used to fight a little bit a few months ago, but nothing came of it. I was going to split them then, but we didn't really have space for a new cage and my mum didn't think it was necessary. A few days ago, I woke up to find Wilson's bum covered in blood. I was worried it might be wet-tail, but i realised this was highly unlikely, as it looked much more like a wound. i split the cage in half using a cereal box and a few stones. They have been managing to get through this barrier, and everytime I see them awake and together, they are fighting. As i write this, Hamlet is trying to dig through the barrier. They have been together since birth, and i am worried the stress of being split up will cause other ailments but obviously i don't want Wilson to be hurt again.I am really worried and don't know what to do. Should I split them? If so how can I stop them from missing each other and being stressed out? Any help would be appreciated xx

You really do need to separate them completely now, cardboard just won't do it, they will need a cage each, robos generally do ok in smaller cages so if you're really short on space better to have two small cages than risk any more injury or even death.

They may be a little stressed by the change but will soon adjust to living alone, it is actually more natural for them to live solitary lives so don't worry about that.

If you have a carrier or something like that(which you should for just about any pet)that may work however you will want to get a second cage of some sort as soon as possible.Even a bin cage would work,in fact that might be the best option!

I can understand your reason for being reluctant to split them up but once they've started to fight to the point where they're drawing blood, things don't tend to improve.

Hamsters can inflict very serious injury on their cage mate during a fight and things can progress into a serious fight very quickly and without much warning. As Cypher says though, robos generally do okay in smaller spaces so it's far more beneficial to separate them entirely than to try to keep them together. As Amity suggests bin cages can be an option and if you put mesh in the sides they can stack so you won't have to find two spaces in the room for their cages.

As the others say - they need separating now. The next fight could leave serious maiming or death - this has happened to a lot of people. With serious maiming it could mean a lot of vet treatment or even having a hamster put to sleep. If you have a storage bin just pop one of them in that for now - even if it isn't made into a bin cage yet - with some substrate and toys/wheel. It doesn't have to be expensive getting a second cage and you could get something that will stack on top of or under your existing cage (eg a bin cage). The Samla bin from Ikea is popular. The cheapest new one to buy that I know is the Standard Duna multy which would make a good cage for a single dwarf hamster. You can get it next day delivery from here and it costs about £33. Bar spacing is small enough for a robo and they are a popular style of tank cage for dwarf hamsters - less diy than a bin cage. Just thinking it might be a quick solution.

If you don't have a plastic storage bin, then maybe try and find a piece of wood to split the cage overnight - but a determined hamster may push it over or get round the edges if it's not wedged tight. I would suggest removing the injured one and leaving the other one in the current cage.

ok thank you, i will make sure the hamster are securely separated tonight and at the weekend i think i will get the samla box and turn it into a bin cage

Maybe get two Samla bins One can be a temporary cage while you turn the other one into a bin cage. Just a thought.

Even if it isn't used as a cage forever it is never a bad thing to have spare bins!
