Tips for taming Hybrid Dwarves?
I've been trying to tame my adopted russian dwarf (hybrid?) for about 2 months, after his settling in period. I swear i've tried almost EVEERYTHING!
When I first got him he would just run straight round treats and bight my hand, now, he takes treats THEN bites my hand. So we have had progress, but not a lot to say he's turned 6 months old.
He doesn't act scared, the only time I have seen him scared was yesterday after he came home from the vets when he would run over my hand, into his house, but not 100% bother about treats like usual.
HoppingHammy suggested putting him elsewhere other than his cage for taming in case it's cage agression, I put him in the bath and in a spare wooden box several times, but he still bit me...
Any suggestion? PLEASE HELP!

Re: Tips for taming Hybrid Dwarves?
Hey there. I'd suggest you wear gloves, firstly. I know it seems a little extreme but if when your hammie bites it makes you flinch (understandably!) it can make them more scared. If you can get him to take treats while speaking to him softly, try putting the treats onto a flat hand in the cage. If he sits on your hand you're making real progress.
It might be that he's feeling territorial, so maybe more bath tub training? Make sure he's got room to get away from you in the bath tub, but reward his confidence with a treat where you can.
I'm sure others will give you some great advice and the very best of luck. X

Re: Tips for taming Hybrid Dwarves?
I don't think the bath is ideal for dwarf hams & is more suitable for syrians.
A play pen (the metal ones you can buy for hams are safe for Russians) is much better, if you put lots of things in to explore, a few familiar things out of the cage can help too, give you ham some time to run around & gradually introduce your hand & see how that works.
It helps if you bury your finger tips in the substrate or poke them under something so only your palm is exposed.

You could use a small storage bin instead These can be very cheap, and most of the time have no escape risks as long as you set them up in a way that doesn't allow for escapes.Or,you could use a combination of different methods!

That often doesn't work well Amity as they can be quite scared being enclosed in a small bin & may be even more inclined to bite.

Re: Tips for taming Hybrid Dwarves?
I got a playpen for Pixie in the end, she's also a hybrid, well, both of mine are but Tinkerbell has taken to taming like a duck to water, Pixie was (still is) more troublesome! I recommend a play pen for sure, it worked with Pixie when nothing else would.
