Making my hamster calm/cuddly?
Hi! I have a syrian ham she's almost a year old now.
I see a lot of videos of chill hammies sitting in people's lap or sleeping in their hands or enjoying a massage and I was wondering if there are any steps I could take to help my ham feel that comfortable with me?
I know not all hams are the same and some just won't, but is there anything I could possibly do to help it?
Thanks!

You could help by using treats and other methods of positive reinforcement, but don't necessarily expect to get a hamster that is extremely cuddly as this isn't always possible.A lot of hams which are friendly can be very energetic as well and those probably won't enjoy being forced to stay still, and that is just one example of personality playing a role in how handleable a hamster is.

You could try bathtub taming? Just a thought

Re: Making my hamster calm/cuddly?
I've never really had a hammie that would "chill" in my lap. Madison and Livingston would sit and eat something in my lap and wouldn't mind me stroking them but they were hardly the "sit down and watch tv" little girls. Instead, I found them to be loads of fun to play with and I'd thoroughly enjoy sitting down with them and handling them on the floor and giving them treats etc. Maybe this is something you could do with your little one?
Bath tub training is a really good way of showing them that you are not a threat and that they can enjoy being out and playing with you around so maybe give this a go? x

Temperament is mostly down to genetics - Calm cuddly parents will pass that down to the babies.
I would try bath tub taming if you really want to try, but a chilled out cuddly hamster isn't a normal thing
