Hamster Sleeping In?
Our Syrian Hamster always comes out of his sleeping area between 8:30-9:00 pm and we let him run around his playpen for a few hours.
It's now midnight and he's still in his nest. I opened the cage a couple times to check on him. He poked his head out, sniffed around, but didn't come out.
I did give him half a carrot last night. Much more than his usual 1" portion.
Is he okay?

Re: Hamster Sleeping In?
It may just be because it's getting colder now, although most hams will have the odd night when they don't stick to their normal routine & I doubt a bit of extra carrot will have done any harm (just check he didn't stash it somewhere!), it is common for syrians in particular to get up later as winter approaches.
Keep an eye on him just in case there's something else going on, if he doesn't come out of his own accord or doesn't appear to be eating & drinking normally a quick health check never hurts.

Re: Hamster Sleeping In?
Thanks for the reply.
We're in California, so the weather is pretty much the same as before.
Also, I should mention he's 15 months old. He was born June 2016.

Re: Hamster Sleeping In?
He probably decided to stay in to gnaw on/guard his carrot Hope he comes out as normal again soon. Just keep an eye and make sure he seems well. I put a little bit of substrate on top of our Syrian's wheel each night before I go to bed then I can see if he's been on it during the night (ie substrate gone). As long as he's using his wheel and taking the veg I put out each evening, I reckon he's ok - but obviously you need to have a peek at them as well to see they look well enough.

Re: Hamster Sleeping In?
So I tried to coax him out of his sleeping area with a boiled egg yolk and cucumber. He was not even slightly interested. His eyes were half closed the whole time.
Finally, I gently lifted open his sleeping hutch and carefully pulled him out. He let me hold him. I checked his limbs and gently pressed down on parts of his body to see if anything made him react. But nothing. I set him on the floor and he walked around. I tried again to feed him the egg yolk, but no interest. I put him back in his cage and he went straight back to his sleeping area, but when he was in the hutch area he starting was making a bunch of squeaking noises.
He's never acted like this before.
I should mention that whenever he hears any of us during his waking hours, he's always trying to come out to get our attention.

Re: Hamster Sleeping In?
Maybe just keep an eye on him. He could have been dreaming. I can see why you are worried though as it's a change in behaviour. I can't see a big piece of carrot would do any harm. If he's back to normal and out and about next night and taking food it could be just he's over indulged and having extra nap time. But if he still seems a bit dopey maybe book a vet appointment and see what's what.

Re: Hamster Sleeping In?
It does sound like a big change in behaviour for him & squeaking is never a good sign so it is possible he's unwell or in pain, unless he was just annoyed at being dragged out of bed but that sounds unlike him.
If he doesn't get back to normal very soon I would get your vet to have a look at him.
