Exclamation Hamster Nibbling Hand

My hamster is always nibbling my hand. She isn't bitting it hard, but I have noticed every time she nibbles me it is getting a slight bit harder each time. It is hard for me to keep calm when she nibbles me because it startles me and then I end up quickly putting her in her cage or on the ground. What should I do to make her stop nibbling me?

How long have you had her?
Nibbling is very different to biting & is a natural exploratory behaviour, something they usually grow out of once they figure out that hands aren't food!
Be sure to wash your hands with an unscented soap before handling her, don't make any sudden movements when she does do it & just gently discourage her, move your hand away slowly.

I've had Angel for about 6 months and she hasn't stopped. I do wash my hands with unscented soap. But she still nibbles me.

You could also try putting your hands in her substrate so the scent is on your hands. I've found that this does help and worth a try.

I think I will try that, because I'm having the exact same problem. Will he be able to make the link between me pulling away and him not getting food? Gonna try the substrate trick hang on

Angelthehamster that is quite unusual as it is something they do normally grow out of, do you feed her treats from your hand?
I don't think you can do much else other than really try hard not to make any sudden movements & only gently discourage her, don't put her back in the cage straight away. I would try just gently stroking her & nudging her mouth away from your hand.

Culprit you've only had your ham a few days so nibbling would be perfectly normal, if you pull your hand away you may just scare him, he should soon learn what is & isn't food so for now if he just nibbles rather than bites ignore it or do as I suggested above.
