Unhappy Going to the Bathroom in Wheel?

Hello! I recently got a young hamster, an albino male Syrian. I've had him for about a week and a half now, and he's all situated in his new home. But ever since I've taken him home, he only goes pee in his wheel. It's the 12" Silent Spinner and it's large so it's a hassle to keep having to take it out of his cage to wash it out constantly. None of my past hamsters have done this so I'm confused. If anybody has any advice, thank you!

My Chineseys have been terrible for peeing in their wheel but I tend to look at it this way, it's better done there than in their nests.

I'd avoid washing it out too frequently as that can actually make the situation worse. They seem to like it being a bit gross and I guess as their eyesight isn't great, they know it's theirs. What I tend to do when I wash Jessie's wheel is rub some of the substrate from her cage in the wheel so that hopefully some of her smell will transfer on to the wheel.

Congratulations on your new hamster by the way!

ahhh thank you very much! xx I'll only clean it when I clean out his cage now, and I'll just have to get used to his habits

I'll usually clean Jessie's about every three to four days depending on how gross it is although if I change the substrate I'll usually wait a day or two before cleaning the toys so it's not too much for her to deal with at once.

If the wheel gets too bad I give it a wipe down with a damp paper towel between cleans, otherwise I give it a good clean with Safe4 disinfectant which is pet safe & virtually scent free once a week.
