THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
Shes 2 month old and shes so annoying, she will never settle down on a night when people are trying to sleep, but the thing is she cnt stop biting the cage, she had a brand new plastic tub cage and she started chewing a hole where the water bottle spout goes, we tryed everything, even putting vasline all over where she was biting and tryed blowing on her and she wouldnt stop. So i went all the way to Bradford today to pick up a hamster tank (made of glass), hoping that would atleast stop her destroying the cage, and she still hasnt given up, shes biting off the sealing that holds the glass panels together, its so loud and annoying and shell end up escaping and i refuse to buy any more cages!
so shall i just get rid, or is there really a solution?!
Oh and if someone mentions taming her i cant go near her she just bites, and she wont take food off me either.

Re: THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
They are nocturnal animals! So of course they don't settle down at night...If she bites and you really can't tame her, then wear gardening gloves and try harder to tame her.
You have a responsibility to her now you have taken her in, you can't just "get rid" because she's not what you expected, that's a disgusting attitude.

Re: THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
She is a young and active animal Chavvy. Does she have a wheel that is big enough so that she can run her energies off? She must have things to do and to chew to keep her busy. They can be noisy at night and you may need to put the cage somewhere where she cannot disturb the sleeping family, even if that means carrying her to the kitchen every night!
Animals are not disposable and you cannot just decide that you want rid of one. If you really feel you cannot cope then you should seek a new home for her where her needs can be met. You must never get another hamster or small rodent again though if you do this.
I hope you can manage to make some progress with taming and seeing her settle as she matures.

I'm afraid with that attitude I don't think you belong on a forum that is meant for people who love and care for their hamsters and want the best for them. I hope things pull through...

Re: THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
Hi Chavvy,
I see from you're profile that you're quite young, but even so at 17 I think you should be a lot more responsible towards any animals that you own. I was looking after hamsters on my own from around 12, and though I probably made some mistakes, I never would've considered getting rid of one for being a chewer. You will just have to persevere and find the right cage for her.
I suspect others might disagree, but you might want to consider getting her a wire cage - chewing the bars has to be better than chewing through plastic. If you do this, watch she doesn't chew them until her nose gets sore, however.
Ensure she has enough to keep her busy. Get her a wheel and you could even try her out in a ball (again, not everyone likes balls but you could use it for short periods to get her out of the cage).
I see from your previous posts that you have only had this hamster for around four weeks or so - what kind of efforts have you made to tame her? If she was young when you got her, it shouldn't be too tough. I'd recommend reading the taming tips on the wikipedia here.
If she bites your hand when you put it in the cage, consider getting her to step into a little box (eg tissue box) and then pull that out, then hold it in/over a plastic bin/bath/bed, with your hand by the entrance so that she has to walk on to it. My robos don't like being picked up yet from their cage, so I tend to pick them up while they are in something (not while they are asleep and they always go in willingly!).
Hope that helps. If you do make the decision to not be her owner any more, please find someone responsible to adopt her.

Re: THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
I agree with what everyone else has said in this thread, getting rid is a horrible attitude to have because she didn't meet your expectations. Does she have anything in the cage to chew on and keep her entertained to try and lure her away from the cage itself.

Re: THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
It is likely that she is sensing the fact that you are annoyed with her too, you need to be patient with them it very rare that a ham will suddenly become your best friend as soon as you meet them. I know the noise is annoying but the companionship I have recieved from all the hams I have had has been worth it, you either get used to the noise or you move them when you want to sleep. What everyone else has said here is true, but you need to be patient and think how would you feel if a big giant wa trying to pick you up. In my opinion I allways felt that even the most difficult animal will eventually respond to loving intentions and you feeling annoyed when you go to pick her up is probably hampering you. Remember slowly slowly catchy monkey, one tiny bit at a time and she will come round.

Re: THE HAMSTER MAY HAVE TO GO :(
I think we gathered that... of course although there are concernes about where the hamster ends up, I am criticising your actual reasoning for 'getting rid' in the first place. It shows a level of immaturity and lack of respect for poor animals who are only following instinct.
