Spoilt hamster??
Hello,
This seems a silly question really, but do you think hamsters can have too much attention?
The reason I ask is my Syrian Mo was in a manic mood last night, and she kept going crazy wanting to come out - chewing the clips on her hanging ladder frantically, chewing the bottle spout and making a desperate bid for freedom everytime I opened the cage lid.
I got her out loads, maybe about 5 times for 10 mins over the course of the evening, plus time in her ball and running on the bed/sofa...but she still seemed to want more and was begging to be let out and being rather stroppy if she wasnt/was put back in chattering her teeth and stomping round the cage chewing everything in sight
Do you think I made her a bit spoilt by getting her out whenever she demanded it and giving her too much attention???
As when I went off to bed she seemed to settle and run in her wheel....
My partner thinks I'm fussing too much over her!!

Re: Spoilt hamster??
Most of our partners do! My boyfriend makes fun of me that i talk about Sheldon so much ... anyway i know what you mean, they just want to get out and if i leave Sheldon for a moment and get out of the room, lights of (or i go to sleep...), he calms down or runs in his wheel. I keep thinking they have such short lives that they should be spoilt!

Re: Spoilt hamster??
I bet that Mo was in season last night Shazzy. We find that females in heat are a little crazy and wheel run, acrobat and make enormous efforts to escape and find a handsome hamster husband. Keep a diary and see if it happens about every 4th night.
Yes they should be spoiled and if you enjoy having them out for playtime then go right ahead I'd say

Re: Spoilt hamster??
Mo was in season on Saturday, so she would be due to come into season again today. However, she is normally an absolutely crazy, nutty hamster - the most hyperactive hamster I've known!! So it's just normal nightly behaviour for her really!
She has a fairly decent size cage (a Duna Multy) but just loves coming out - and because I give in to her all the time she just obsesses about coming out all the time! Oh well, I was just worried that I was making her naughty!
My partner loves Mo, but does not share the same frame of mind in terms of the way I treat her. Think he's just jealous cos I pay her much more attention of an evening than him!
I also talk to her like she's a human, which Dan (my partner) finds hilarious....but then I do that with my favourite Horse Peggy at my riding stables and everyone thinks I'm nuts, but Peggy would come to me everytime out of a crowd of people and we have a great relationship.
My old Guinea pig Harrold was also spoilt, but i cherished the relationship we had because I know he loved me and that felt so good!
So...Mo is spoilt, but she deserves it. I feel bad keeping her in a cage when she could be roaming free, so feel I have to make up for it by getting her out and giving her tons of attention!!
Anyway, I'll stop rambling!

Re: Spoilt hamster??
i know what you mean, mine are like that, too. The more they're let out, the more they want to be let out. People are always commenting on how attention-demanding my hamsters are. If they see a human in the room and they are awake then they assume they are coming out to play... and aside from when i'm going to bed, they are!
I don't think there's anything wrong with spoiling your hams at all
