Peeing in the Wheel
Hi guys!
As some of you may know, I recently got a new hamster (Leo). He recently started developoing a bad behavior of peeing in his wheel. I did notice that there was pee on the Petsmart wheel where I got him from, but I was hoping to train him to stop. Is there any advice that you guys can give me? I am really distraught about this, as my other hamster never did this!
Please help guys!

Re: Peeing in the Wheel
Some hamsters just... Pee on their wheel! Trust me, it isn't rare. I personally have never have the problem with my ham peeing on their wheel, but she pooped on her wheel a lot. I ended up washing it every 4-5 days or so. You could try litter training or adding a sand bath as an alternative place to pee, but some hamsters just pee on their wheel and don't stop. I'd recommend washing it every 3-4 days (adjust this to what you think would be best) to keep it from getting super stinky and gross. Best wishes!

The weird thing is that he is potty trained except for his wheel peeing. It almost seems like he is too bothered to stop running on it to go pee. This just started happening only a few days ago, so I hope he'll stop.

Re: Peeing in the Wheel
Some times young hams are just having too much fun to stop running & go for a pee in the right place! Dwarf hams will often continue to pee in the wheel forever but syrians are more likely to grow out of it, they can also do it to mark it as their own so don't clean it too often, the more you clean the more they pee!
I generally give mine a wipe down with a damp paper towel every couple of days, no cleaners or disinfectant then clean it with a fragrance free pet safe disinfectant about once a week.

Re: Peeing in the Wheel
3 out of 4 of my hammies pee in their wheels, don't believe it's helpful to try to train them not to do it? Don't know how you would even go about training them not to pee in their wheels? Would advise against it as its normal for them to do so.

Re: Peeing in the Wheel
Since he just started this I would suspect it is due to him becoming a young adult man ham who is looking for LOVE and is beginning to scent mark everything he wishes to claim as his own. As several already said this behavior will INCREASE if you fully clean and disinfect the wheel. He may quit once he realizes there is no suitors coming to mate with him, but some never give up hope(especially if you have a female in the home with him).
