Default bottle/cage chewing

Hi guys,

I have a lil prob with one of my syrians, we recently brought her a ferplast duno multy (i think thats what its called from memory) anyways there is a small hole so we can put the bottle nob through in to the cage, she first took to biting this which made a racket but i didnt mind too much anyways she then moved on to biting the plastic around the hole which then began to get so bad i could see light coming through...

So i took away the bottle and gave her a bowl with stones in. attempted to cover the hole and chewed spot with a mineral stone... she pulled this straight off! So then i swapped her cage round so that the wooden house/fort she lives in blocks the hole... HOWEVER she has now taken to filling her water bowl up with shavings which soak up all the water and i dont want to leave her without any....

Any ideas?? i would like to go back to the bottle but im worried if she eats too much of the cage firstly this is not good for her and secondly she might escape!!

Hiya,

i use bowls for all of my hamster, Syrians and Robos, and unfortunately that is just something i need to do every day for most of them - empty and replace the water bowl!! I know this is very time consuming, and sometimes i need to do it 2 or 3 times a day, especially for the ones which like the dig!!

You could try using one of the 'sippy' bottles - i think that is what they are called - they stick to the cage (inside or outside) with suckers - but it just depends how interested you hamster is with it, as it might pull it down if it pays too much attention to it!

Does the cage not have a shelf? could you not put the bowl on the shelf and put no shavings or bedding on the shelf so there is nothing to fill it up?

Let us know how you get on

Good Luck,

Tammy x

We have someone (Parma thats you!) who is trying to chew out of the spout hole In the end we have had to stick a square of perpex over the hole using superglue! We have drilled another hole much higher up and she can't reach that to chew though she does have to stretch up a bit to drink but seems to manage. Some people dangle the water bottle from an elastic band so the they can lick it but it is hard to chew on a swinging bottle. Personally we don't like the sippies as they are so hard to clean and tend to leak. Some hams can't use them either but it is still worth a try. If you can find a way of sticking the bottle very firmly in place so she can move it out or wedging it so only the very tip in actually in the cage they tend to give up. We have also used pots for a few hammies but they do need changed often and you can't leave them for say a couple of nights if you are away. You can also get water bottle holders that free stand or you can make one with a plastic drink bottle. Cut the top off and a hole in the side for the spout. Fill the bottom with sand or stones so it does not tip then push the bottle in with spout through the hole and jam in place. Stand in the cage and there you go

Thanks very much for the ideas guys, i shall try the swinging bottle. The problem i have Tammy is that i work 8.30-5 during the day and am also an Ann Summers rep so im out some evenings from about 7.30 til 10.30... thats a long time for a hammy to go without a slurp

Either way ill try the elastic tonight, im not a fan of the sippy bottles as i had one for Jez and she couldnt work it out bless her

ill let you know how i get on

Yes, i was saying that in my post - it is very time consuming, and i understand that it would be unsuitable for someone with a full time job which is why i was asking if there were any shelves in the cage which could be used to stand the bowl on to prevent it from being filled with shavings / beddings.

I have never used the sippy bottles, so i didnt know they were not very good - but souffle has given some great alternative ideas

Good Luck

My syrian is still quite small and is a rody hamster at the moment, although I have taken out the shelf to give him more floor space and have a free standing wheel.
Because I removed the shelf where the bottle holder is, I had a similar problem. I solved it by buying a normal small animal bottle that had a hanging loop on the bottom
and I threaded the metal strip, designed to go round the bottle to attach it to the wire cage, tbhrough this hole and then hang it from the bars at the top of the cage.
He seems to manage to drink it without any problems!
