Urgent- My winter white is chewing bars
My winter white Nibblette is chewing her cage bars non-stop. I think she is bored but here is the problem. She gave birth five days ago. Does any one know a pup-safe way to stop the bar chewing?

Re: Urgent- My winter white is chewing bars
Did she just recently started chewing on bars after the pups were born? I don't know what would be safe to put on the bars but after the pups are old enough you could make a bin cage for them? 110 qt bin cg is 360 Sq in.
Not sure what size cage you have them in now but you want to make sure it's a minimum of 360 Sq in.
Bin cages are inexpensive & easy to make. If your interested you can just take the lid to a hardware store & have them cut out most of the top & then attach mesh with zip ties, everything including labor only cost me $13.50, the bin you can buy at Walmart or Target. Hope this helps?
Sometimes Pet-Co & Pet Smart have $1/gal sales too on tanks. 20 gal is 360 Sq in but if you could go 40 gal, that would be better for a breeder tank.

Re: Urgent- My winter white is chewing bars
I am in the process of making a bin cage. I have a 118 qt. bin at the ready. I just need the wire which is very hard to come by in my area. Right now she is in a Kaytee crittertrail extreme challenge habitat. I know it is extremely small but I did not know the 360 square inches rule when i bought the cages.

Re: Urgent- My winter white is chewing bars
When I had my bin (top) cage made, the hardware store had the mesh in stock
Also, you don't even need a lid if you don't have any other pets. But I like a top for the summertime when the fan & air conditioning is on in case it blows hair around?

Re: Urgent- My winter white is chewing bars
The nearest hardware store that has the mesh I need is a 30 minute drive, and I don't have a car. Plus I need smaller gauge mesh because I have 7 cats and a very curious dog.

I don't know much about breeding hams but I wouldn't have thought it was a good idea to change her living quarters just after she has had pups. I think they can cull the little ones if they get stressed so make sure you don't get in her space too much and freak her out

I agree with herbi. I have no experience at all but it would possibly be better to distract her with chews?

Re: Urgent- My winter white is chewing bars
Thanks for your replies everyone. My choice was made easy when she almost escaped her cage. I moved her into a bin where her and her pups are very happy.
