Default Hamster won't stop jumping

We cannot hold our new syrian hamster. We've had him about two weeks. He isn't as skittish as he was, but things are still hard. His tank is up on a shelf, and the one time I tried getting him out by hand, he dove off my chest right onto the ground. If he runs along my arms, he dives right off. If we have him on the bed, he'll run to the edge and try to jump, with no warning at all. For now, we're keeping him down on the floor, but I'd really like to be able to hold him, and if I put him to my chest, he'll dive for the floor and I don't want him to get hurt. He is SO fast, too. I've never once owned a hamster this fast, and all of the others I've owned wouldn't jump anywhere unless they were practically on top of it.

Please tell me this will get better and how to fix it! He's such a cutie, and I just want to cuddle him, but I'm worried it's not ever going to happen. He never sits still, ever. If he's not trying to jump, he's running.

Help?

This is quite normal for a new and young hamster snapdragon. He is skittish and a little scared still. He won't sit on your chest until you have mastered the hand to hand running and he is secure in being handled and picked up. Can you take him in an empty bath and let him walk over you as he cannot escape from there. Keep on the floor for now and have a look in the WIKI at our taming tips article. He will be fast and jumpy till he is fully tamed so be prepared by keeping him low over a soft surface. I'm sure it will not be long before he calms down.
