Unhappy Why is my hamster acting like this?

I got my hamster about 1 month ago, she was tamed. She would let me pet her and come onto my hand even if I don't have a treat, and won't run away if I try to pick him up. Now he's starting to run when I try to pick him up, even if I'm scooping him up. And he will only come onto my hand if I have treat, and he gets all excited when I open the cage, it's a bin cage. And I thought it was because he wanted to play, but once I try to pet him or let him walk on my hand he just smells my hand and just ignore it cause I don't have any treat. a Now when I try to pet him he just backs up from my hand. I don't know what to do. I know he's tamed cuz he's not hiding from me, and he's not afraid and takes treats.

Hi, you've not had your hamster long and it does sound like he isn't that tame yet actually, he's obviously not afraid of you but maybe not that confident with you yet. That will come in time.

Is he excited because he wants to come out and play? Do you let him out to play? There is no requirement for a hamster to walk into your hand, even a tame hamster may prefer not to. One of mine will march right out of the cage onto my hand any any given moment, the other prefers to climb into something like a large bowl to come out of his cage, and he is the tamer/cuddlier of the two of them.

I do recall when I was taming the cuddly one, he went through a stage of trying to avoid my hands because he wanted to get down an explore rather than be "caught" in my hands.

Also, mine don't always take treats from my hands, so don't worry about that.

Hi there. As Bertie says, a month isn't that long. I sometimes find it depends what time of night it is as to how active our Syrian is. Anything up to 8.30pm and he doesn't want to be held or sit still and zooms around. Between 9pm and 10pm he just goes to sleep on you lol! And is easy to handle then - although even though he is very tame, he still doesn't like being held in hands for more than a minute, but will sit on your arm to be stroked when he's dopey.

It sounds like he is used to you and your scent, but not used to being handled much yet, which is what Bertie means when saying he isn't that tame yet. Bathtub taming can be good for getting them used to being handled. I did a little video on how we tamed ours - it's not great quality but has a few tips for getting them used to being handled (tips mostly learned on here!)

Also, as Bertie says, maybe he just needs some activity time and is full of energy - bathtub taming/playtime could help with that too - it can be a kind of playpen.

I handle him everyday, he doesn't care to be handled but he just doesn't like being picked up. He has playtime every day. So I don't think he was excited to come out cuz if he was he would come onto my hand. After he plays for a while he'll willingly climb on my hand when I put my hand down. Why is that? And what should I do more to let him be more confident?
