Default Trixie bit me and drew blood...

Yes, my dear Trixie bit me today and drew blood. She has nipped at me at times (usually if she smells food on my hands) but never to this degree. Plus she has been quite destructive in her cage the past few days. I'm a bit concerned. Any words of wisdom or advice? Trixie is my very first hamster and have had her 2 months.

Ouch! Does she seem unwell at all or limping? She may be grumpy if I'll or injured. Aside from that, what is cage like? Do you have a picture? Sometimes changes to their layout/the cage their in may help?

Biting & changes in behaviour can be a sign of illness or injury as Velma said, is she still eating & drinking ok? More info about her set up would help. Have you changed anything in her cage recently that might have bothered her? You haven't had her long so she may just need more time to tame & settle down, changing things around in the cage or over cleaning will cause behaviour problems so be careful about that.

Could she be having a bad heat day? Females are in heat every 4 days.
Twinkle can be quite destructive in her cage, this has only happened a couple of times when she's in heat, I also noticed during these she was more smelly.
You might've surprised your ham, hence the bite.

Trixie is in the Barney cage ( American version). A couple days before the bite I did make some changes to her cage (added some things while removed others). My son (whom I think is her favorite in the family) handled her last night and she was perfect for him. It seems since my kids were on holiday break from school her sleep schedule changed - she is awake more during the day than usual.

Where is her cage kept? If she's kept in a busy room where the children are playing, then she may be being woken up by the additional noise and that could be making her a bit grumpy.

My chinese female can get quite grumpy if I dare to remove any of her special toys and until she's got things back how she wants them she can be a bit out of sorts. Thankfully I know what she's like now so I'll minimise disruption to her cage as much as possible.

I'd agree with some of the others suggestions that it may be a hormonal thing. When May was still quite young there were a couple of times when she'd be in heat and an absolute nightmare and the only times she'd ever bitten me has been when she'd been in heat. She settled as she got older though and whilst she's still a live wire and doesn't sit still she's not a biter.

It has happened with me before with my Passed Hamster, Snow (Rip). I had KFC and I washed my hands before taking Snow out, obviously Snow could still smell it and she bit me and drew blood.
After you eat, wash your hands more than once!
