Default Tell me all the pros/cons of girls vs. boys :)

I know that each individual is different, but give me a general run down on the differences.

What I've picked up so far is that girls are larger? But they are also smellier, and moodier?

If you have anything to add or dispute, let me know!

ETA: for Syrian hamsters

Yes. Smellier because they go into heat about every 4 days. If I would have known this I would have got a boy Shhhhh! Don't let Scarlet hear what I said don't really know much else, as I have never had a boy before. Sorry I'm not much of a help.

I've had experience with both male and female Chinese and Syrians, however it's been a long time since I've owned Syrians.

- Females come into heat every four days and this can cause a slight smell, however males also have their own scent that is less fluctuating and so is less noticeable.
- Males are more laid back which can make them easier to hold.
- Females tend to be more active and will prefer to explore rather than sit still whilst being held.
- Females seem to have very distinct personalities which I don't notice in quite the same way in my males.

I have only had a male and he is huge so I was surprised when people said females tend to be larger - I guess there are exceptions. I have also read of other males being quite lazy and snoozy and ours is a bit like that mostly - but then there are some who are quite active. From what I've read on here, people with female Syrians are often posting fun pictures with fun expressions and funny housekeeping stories like moving substrate around. People who post about their males often post cute snuggly pictures and their males seem easy going. Maybe it's a bit like humans! I read some psychology thing once that said girls deal with things by chatting with their friends, and men are more inclined to keep things to themselves. So maybe females are more chatty and interactive, but our male, in his own little way, is more of a listener!

I like that Charlie will go to sleep on me and accept being stroked. On the one occasion he was very active and rushing about, it wasn't that nice, because he was under stress (after we'd been on holiday and brought him home again) and didn't seem happy, more a bit manic. So his normal way is to be a bit reclusive and independent.

But a lot depends on how they have been brought up as well I think. Ours was a pet shop hamster who had hardly been handled (if at all - they used to get him out in a tube - as a result that is about the only way I can get him out of his cage!). He took a couple of months to tame so we could hold him.

Hamsters like the babies Souffle bred recently, have been handled and used to humans from the word go and that must shape their personalities too.

Sorry - that wasn't a very clear answer! My impression is that female Syrians are maybe a bit more fun and interactive but can be a bit of a pain at times, especially when in heat maybe. Whereas males are generally a bit more laid back but can also be moody at times - ours does it more with looks than actions! (Although he did stick his bum out at me twice when he was annoyed about something).

It really depends on the hamster. Yes, females do go into heat every 4 days or so, but males have their own little odor! I've only had one female and she was tiny, only about 112 grams! She was super active and always wanted to run around! She was super eager for o tame and was willing to climb up my arm on the day I brought her home! But, in the end, it really depends on the hamster!

I have had loads of syrian hamsters both boys and girls and while they are both different I have found that their personal personalities rather than gender traits make the most of the difference. I have had snugglers that are girls and zippy quick explorers that are boys.

All my hamsters have been roughly the same size so can't really comment to difference in size and as to the smell I have never had a lady (or boy for that matter) ham that smelt much at all. Girls you have to sniff them regularly to check for pyro but even then to be honest mine haven't been that strong. I actually love smelling my hams backs (I pretend they are furry moustaches lol) because they always smell like the essence of snuggling in a duvet to me (and its SO SOFT)- and my hams have always been very good natured and not minded walking along my arm under my nose with me going "look at my hamstache" .

I have never gone looking for a particular gender but always got the ham that climbed onto me first or looked particularly cheeky and I have got a complete mix that way.

I have loved them all however the ones that have been the particular stars over time are the ones that had lots of handling prior to getting them. I would ways get a hamster from a private breeder or rescue where the hamsters have been trained to be happy with being held.

Very generally boys are calmer and easy to handle and girls are more whizzy. I have had some very handlable girls though!

I aways go for the one i fall in love with.

I have two boys, one is very whizzy and the other is more cuddly! Also the cuddly one is very neat and tidy whereas the whizzy one can be a bit smelly somtimes. I think it's best to just pick the ham you fall in love with, and don't overthink it too much. I chose Nibble, who is my perfect ham because he's big, friendly, cuddly and very low maintenance, it took me about 30 seconds to choose him. My daughter chose Glowy (or did he choose her?! Once I saw them pressing their noses together through the glass in the pet shop, it was a done deal!) and he is perfect for her - she's too young to look after him on her own or handle him really, but he puts on very entertaining shows of his hamster antics for her every day so she gets a lot out of having him as a pet.

Willow is a girl Syrian and a real handful, but she has such a gentle affectionate sweet nature I wouldn't swap her for the world. She is 22 months now so not as interested in boys as she was, but the upsetting thing I found about having her was every time she came into heat she would be like a hamster on speed... this is because in the wild it's the girls who go out and find the boys, not the other was round. I felt it was kind of torture for her not to b able to explore further, she was always desperate to escape through any tiny air hole or crack. She has calmed down a bit now but still has to run around every night for a good hour. She was never very smelly, they have a sort of musky smell when they are in heat but i never found it unpleasant and she is a very clean ham by nature so her living quarters are always spotless. She is basically gorgeous but hard work. My next ham will hopefully be lazier . But I'd miss my Willow-kisses... always given in passing at high speed! She buts her nose into my face and squeaks happily before rushing off to be busy!

Lol. When did he do this? Scarlet has never done that. I'm so lucky.
