Hello Niamhb, and welcome to Hamster Central. I am so sorry your Fluffnugget is missing. If she has escaped, be aware that hamsters can show up weeks after the escape. I had one hammy lost for about 6 weeks before I caught him. They are amazing at finding a place to nest and sneaking their food to their new home.
Now, unless Daisy Killed and ate all of Fluffnugget, which I don't think she could do, you would smell a dead hamster. I really think she's an escapee. Hopefully she'll pop out soon. Fingers crossed for her return.

Hi everyone,

I have sad news. Since Daisy give birth I have been spot cleaning the cage as best I could without disturbing the nest. Today as I was removing the fluffy bedding (on advice from another forum) I found Fluffnugget.

I didn't look too closely as I was afraid of what I would see, but what I could see was the unmistakable fur and tail with her distinctive colouring. I am absolutely heartbroken, even though I had my suspicions, to actually have it confirmed is a real blow.

To make it worse, I think the only surviving baby may be gone also. Daisy has hardly been to the nest and there is no more squeaking, I had a quick check and couldn't see him. I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for everyone's help and tips anyway :'(

I am so sorry to hear this. Very very sad. There could be a number of reasons Fluffnugget died (fluffy bedding being one of them). Daisy was only really a baby herself and maybe couldn't handle being a Mum. Now you have spot cleaned, just observe for a while. Assume you have taken Fluffnugget out now.

Hi Serendipity7000, I have taken fluffnugget out. She was in the little house where the nest was all along, which was my suspicion. It is odd to me that Daisy left her baby in there with the dead hamster, but it appears that the baby has been moved now, or at least that is my hope. Daisy has piled up the wood chippings bedding beside where the house is, so I am hoping and praying that she has just moved the baby out to this new nest, because if not then I can only assume that Daisy ate the baby too. The nest had a strong odour and was filthy when I checked it so lets hope she moved the baby to a cleaner area.

Daisy isn't sleeping in this new nest though she has been sleeping in the tubing (where she used to sleep before the babies), which I'm guessing isn't a good sign.

The baby would be 2 weeks old on Wednesday, so I would have thought it would be moving around a bit and I would have maybe seen it if it wasn't hidden in the house, but who knows. I'm going to give it another few days before I worry.
