He Escaped!
So I bought Einstein this playpen called the You & Me Run & Play Space Small Animal Playpen in medium size. So I placed him in and I thought the horizontal bars were to high up for him to reach and I thought it was physically impossible for him to get out. I went to go take a shower after placing him in the pen he had water and food so i assumed he would be happy with all his toys but when I came back he was gone! Nowhere to be seen in the playpen, HE HAD ESCAPED! I searched around my room when I saw him scurry across the floor, I quickly snatched him up and placed him in his cage. Can anyone advise me on how to keep this from happening again? Can someone tell me if there is a way to keep him from getting up the bars on the pen? Even though they are mostly vertical bars he always find the horizontal ones. I spent a lot of money on the pen and he continues to escape. Can someone please help me?

Re: He Escaped!
Hamsters love to climb and will go to all extremes to do so. I always supervise mine when she's playing, I never leave her unsupervised. You were very lucky to catch him so quickly.

If you have DIY skills you could make a cloth mesh cover which adheres using elastic band, but it is never a wise thing to leave any hamster unattended while in a playpen as Thin Lizzy has already pointed out.

The same goes for a ball, if you use one. They can bash their way out of a ball so should never be left unsupervised in their ball either.

Re: He Escaped!
You should always supervise your hamster, even in a hamster safe area. I am lucky enough to have a "playtime room" witch is basically just an empty room with a meshed baby gate blocking the doorway. Technically, I could just leave Tori there and not have to worry, but she is a little escape artist (as are most hamsters) and would somehow find a way. To make the playpen safer would require a little DIY. There are two options:
1) Tape fabric to the walls of the barred playpen
2) Make your own playpen out of cardboard boxes (there are many tutorials on YouTube)
Hope this helps!

Re: He Escaped!
You could return it and make one from cardboard boxes. But as has already been said, it`s better to be with your hamster at all times when they are placed on the floor, even in what is considered to be a secure play pen. Ideally you want a solid-sides walled play pen. Making one from the sides of cardboard boxes and taping them together doesn`t cost anything. x
