Female hamsters going through Heat?
Hiya!
So this evening I could smell quiet a strange smell coming from Joycee's cage, like wee but less strong, and after doing some research I read up about heat being their 4 day cycle? I was just wondering if anyone could give me anymore information about it. I'm not sure of Joycees age as the pet shop never told me when we adopted her but I know she is over 5/6 months, maybe more.
Joycee is eating and drinking as normal but she is a lot more active and hyper, climbing around everywhere and extremely eager to go into her ball, so that's where she is currently.
Any advice and tips would be appreciated
Thank you

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
I smelt the exact same thing the other day too from Pixie's cage!
I wasn't sure whether I was slacking on cleaning duties but the next day, nothing!
Now thinking it was her in heat? xD

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
Sometimes it's described as a musky or even a fishy smell, both totally normal. It's also normal not to notice, I only notice Cc is in heat if she's also scenting everything like mad. Some girls get quite stinky I've heard but I've been very lucky so far with my 4

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
I've had 2 females in the past and I've never noticed until Joycee! It may be as I'm paying closer attention to her because she's new and I become like one of those slightly over concerned parents haha!
The smell isn't too noticeable unless I hold her or sit near to her by her cage

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
They're in heat every 4 days. Twinkle can get a bit whiffy, and she goes a bit diva on me.
I've had 2 females in the past and they never had a smell on their heat days so, when I first got Twinkle, it was quite a shock.

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
We have 2 females in the house and Hime is the only one that gets stinky when she is in heat. She has super high energy during this time, but doesn't go around scent marking everything. I will admit I was afraid something was wrong the first cycle she went through with us. My younger brothers had females that I took care of, and none of them ever had a strong odor.

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
It seems like they are all different. My previous girl showed no sign except when you stroked her back she'd lift her tail up! My current girl is MENTAL and runs around like crazy when she is in heat and she has a weird smell. You can only smell it when you actually pick her up and are really close but my boyfriend hates it :P can't really liken it to anything else, it's an odd smell.

Joycee is exactly the same! So very active and alert and a strange smell, but today there is no sign of it! I was afraid something was wrong too!
Joycee is exactly the same as your girl Peasypea

Re: Female hamsters going through Heat?
Some tell tale signs of being in heat are them being quite giddy, musky smelling, leaking a whiteish fluid and lifting up their bum when you stroke their back! c:
