Question Cage biting?!

Hi,

I got a Winter White Dwarf Hamster around 2 weeks ago. She is 4 months old in August. She's been adjusting well and everything, but she absolutely seems to ADORE biting her cage.

I've read a bit about trying to stop it- I've tried a few different methods. I've blown on her nose while she bites, she doesn't seem fazed by that at all. I also sometimes try to distract her by petting her but she doesn't seem to be distracted by that either!

I have a chewing carrot to chew on when she needs to, but she has been completely ignoring it. She chooses to chew her cage instead.

I really get unnerved when I see her chewing, it both worries me for her health and for the fact she might get through the bars. I have no other ideas how to stop it and I am getting very annoyed with her doing it.

Please give me some ideas to stop this. I'm pretty desperate!

Thanks!

Hi there. What kind of cage is she in? Hamsters sometimes do this because they are stressed and one reason they can be stressed is if the cage is too small.

Serendipity 7000- I talked to you earlier and sent you a picture of my cage. You did mention it is too small. I will be investing in a bigger cage soon- and I will have to see if her cage chewing improves.
Thanks.

Have you tried putting things (e.g cardboard or a wooden toy) in the way of the bars she chews? She may just start chewing a different bit of the bars or she might decide to chew the cardboard instead.
If you do choose to buy her a new cage then I'd consider going for a tank-style cage next time, then it'll be harder for her to reach the bars to bite them
