Pouch..unpouch...pouch
So, the Pipster started doing something verry odd, but quite funny. I don't think it's a problem, it's just a new behaviour now that she has the giant palace cage.
She has starting stuffing her cheeks with food, the grains she gets (she has a huge bowl with them) runs around all glad and stuff, and then unpouches them back in the bowl. And she does this several times while shes awake. It's very odd.
Anyone got any clue?

Nope! Unless she's just being indecisive and can't decide where to make a hoard! Or unless the silly ham has turned her food bowl into her hoard ha ha.

Re: Pouch..unpouch...pouch
Some hams do use their food bowl as a hoard so maybe that's what she's doing.
It might be fun to try scatter feeding & see if she collects it all up & puts it in the bowl!

Re: Pouch..unpouch...pouch
I've only seen something like this once before, in a hamster who had lived his whole life in a tiny cage. He stuffed his mouth with a huge wad of shredded nesting material and went all around the cage before coming back to the pile and deciding just to nest where he'd started. Perhaps when they encounter a new space and they don't know how big it is they take some supplies with them (like a hiker's backpack!) just in case they go a long way from where they already know they can find stuff?

Re: Pouch..unpouch...pouch
I checked around this cage this morning. She has 3 (!) storing sites that i can see. One is the bowl (you can see the biscuits she kept in her cheeks), the left front corner of the cage, and the exact diagonal opposite of it.
Im assuming she has another in her nest too (which looks tottaly ravaged right now).

I'm always quite jealous when I hear of peoples' hamsters having lots of hoards in interesting places. Charlie only has one hoard - and he sits on it like a Mother Hen!

Lol! There's about 4 inches deep of hoard underneath him at times Although he has been turning his potty into an overflow larder recently.

Re: Pouch..unpouch...pouch
LOL! I immediately thought of a Tolkien character as well but I went for Smaug on his golden hoard

Yes Charlie is a mini Smaug lol. He doesn't breathe fire but if looks could kill .... He doesn't trust my hand at the moment when he saw it spot cleaning his hoard and gave it a look.
