Chatty little guy!
Hey guys! Long time no post!
Just a quick one; my 20 week old Syrian Syd, has been doing something recently that I don't quite understand. He's tame enough to be handled and is typically a chilled out dude. However I'll pop him on the arm of the sofa (which he is used to) to chill with me, and he'll chatter his teeth. Not on a particularly aggressive way. He'll slouch down comfortably but it is confusing. Anyone got any ideas why he might be doing this?

How long has Syd been doing this for? Have you bought anything new and placed it in the room? If you have, he may see/smell the new item as a threat.

Re: Chatty little guy!
We've been doing this every day for at least a month I would say. He seems genuinely happy during the time I have him out usually

I don't know what it is! But I'm not a real expert. Does he seem shivery or shakey at the same time? I'm guessing not. Maybe it's just a little habit he has started, but they do get nervous easily. See if he still does it if you put him on your knee and stroke him maybe?

Re: Chatty little guy!
Is there any chance its a contented clicking? Hamsters do click for a huge variety of reasons (including some good reasons and some bad ones) so the clicking alone doesn't really tell you much. If he seems happy and content when making the noise I'd not worry too much at the moment

Re: Chatty little guy!
Smokey makes a chattering sound when she's cross, but she also makes one which to me sounds a little different - she usually makes it when she has yet again chewed her way out of her cardboard playpen and it sounds to me like a noise to express satisfaction that she chewed her way out! So maybe Syd just really likes chilling with you and is letting you know!

I'm starting to think it could be contentment! He's always half asleep when he does it so maybe he's happy to be so relaxed and he's letting me know? Who knows. I have a weird little guy

Re: Chatty little guy!
My last Syrian used to chatter her teeth when she was falling asleep sometimes, both in an out of her cage (maybe like how humans sometimes grind their teeth when they're sleeping?). To me it sounds like he's a content little guy talking to himself as he falls asleep Or maybe he's just telling you that he's happy?
