Exclamation How to tame a Syrian hamster

Hi I am new to hamsters and just got mine yesterday and I would just like to know to tame my hamster so that she will let me touch her and handle her.
Thanks

Default Re: How to tame a Syrian hamster

Hi & welcome to the forum
Give your new ham a couple of days at least to settle in before you begin to try any taming.
You could begin with the tissue trick, put a tissue up your sleeve for a few hours then put it in the cage & repeat that for a few days so your ham can get accustomed to your scent.
Talk to her quietly whenever you're near the cage so she gets used to your voice & having you around.
Once she's settled in a bit introduce your hand into the cage but don't force it on her, try to let her come to you, you could put a treat on your hand to encourage her.
It can be easier to tame them out of the cage so try to find something she will be happy to climb into, a large cup or mug, box, ball or tube should work then handle her in a safe place, either the bath or a playpen area.
Be patient & take your time, don't try to rush anything & you'll get there a lot quicker!
Let us know how you get on.
