Bar Chewing and Peeing in Nest
Hammy, my Syrian, moved into his new Hamster Heaven cage a couple of weeks ago, having previously been in a Savic Rody. Since getting him 2 months ago, he's been at the vets twice to have his teeth clipped. He hadn't been gnawing at anything I provided, and his top teeth weren't growing properly, so the vet cut them right down in the hope that they would grow back properly. In the last few days, I've noticed that he's started chewing the bars of his cage (which he obviously wasn't able to do in the Rody). I've read differing opinions about bar chewing online. Some say it's harmful and should be discouraged, others say let it continue. I'm minded to let him get on with it, as I'm just glad he's finally gnawing on something, am I doing the right thing?
The other problem I'm currently having with him is that he's peeing in his nest (the little igloo provided with the cage). This has only started in the last week or so, prior to that he'd been using the hamster litter tray, which also came with the cage. Having read that hamsters are clean animals by nature, this behaviour obviously isn't right, can anyone provide with me with any reasons and possible remedies for it? All advice greatly appreciated!!
