Wow
I have my syrian in my room and she does keep me up sometimes but it's usually because she WANTS to. Bar chewing and putting food in her wheel for attention are awful habits I am trying to break her of and I know she only does it when there's a light in the room or she hears me.
I hate having to put her in the living room tho, sometimes the bf can't sleep because he's not used to her and I always worry about her hurting herself or getting stuck somewhere or being too cold she's having a holiday with my mum at the minute while I spend some time away and I miss her noises at night.
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
I've kept all of my Syrians in my room (I've only had 1 at any given time) and never had any problems with noise....until my current girl, Mitzi. She's constantly coming up with new and louder ways to make noise in the night. However, she does have a few tried and tested noise-making activities for the nights when she's feeling a little less creative. Her favorite is dragging (or attempting to drag) large objects up the tubes that connect her tanks to her nesting bubble. This happens so often that getting a video of it was fairly easy:
She currently has a chew toy that's twice as long as she is, and she seems to think that she can get it through the tube and up to her nest by holding it in her mouth like a dog bone and running into the entrance of the tube really quickly. After overhearing a few hundred failed attempts it's quite clear to me that this will never work, but she's a very determined girl.
Usually at around 2 or 3 in the morning I end up having to drag myself out of bed so that I can wrestle whatever large object she's decided to throw around that night away from her and out of her cage. Then she wanders off to the corner of her tank to sulk and scrap her teeth on the glass while chewing the tank sealant until about 20 minutes before I have to get out of bed. Yet for some reason I wouldn't feel right moving her to another room...
So as others have said, whether or not you can tolerate a hamster living in your room has a lot to do with the particular hamster, your sensitivity to noise, and how much nonsense you're willing to put up with in the middle of the night.
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
Well, I said my hamster didn't make any noise.. Until last night.
Winston usually gets up around 1 - 2am and i'm usually asleep by then, but last night i was on here and researching about hams. As soon as i tried to sleep he started running on his wheel and because i'm not used to it, i couldn't get to sleep.
I had to turn my fairy lights on so he would stop, he went back to bed when i turned them on and i felt quite bad but i'm sure he adjusted to the light when i was sleeping
But like others have said, it wouldn't seem right not to have him in my room... and there's no where else in the house that's quiet and draft free that would fit a 4ft tank, haha!
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
Chibi lives under my bed since the dog is allowed in every other room and I would feel bad suddenly not letting the dog in other rooms. Chibi's usually on his noisy wheel at 1-2am but I have severe insomnia so he's asleep before me so it never bothered me.
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
Heres a question... what if you had a bar-less cage like the Detolf and a silent wheel (can anyone recommend any good ones, appart from a silent spinner?!?) do you think it would be much of a problem?
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
I'm very lucky in the fact that my chinese doesn't make a peep. I'm defiantly in the same boat as Mweekie though, my two corn snakes can be noisier! Even though those two are usually very good as well
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
There are a few types of wheels that work well with bar-less cages. If you don't mind telling us what country you live in it will be easier to make a recommendation because not all wheels are available in every country. If you don't want to share that information, it's not a problem - we can give you suggestions for wheels that are available in most places.
Re: What is it like having a hamster cage(s) in your room?
if you get them a silent spinner they are very quiet. I don't recommend a metal wheel. my hamster does pee in his sleep so it gets all over his but and he stinks a bit but I clean his cage more often because of that. people say their hamsters stink but it really is how often you clean the cage.
