Default Bar chewing.

The last few weeks my hamster has started bar chewing. It is driving me insane! He has loads of toys and a wheel so can't be bored. He always goes back to the same place to chew. I tried putting his wheel where he chews but he climbed ontop to get to the same spot. I'm worried hes going to hurt himself. It cant be good for him! Whys he doing this and how can I stop him?

he is doing this maybe because his cage is too crowded, too small or he is just trying 2 escape
i suggest u make him a hamster bin cage or a 20gallon aquarium that way he has no bars 2 chew on
i suggest u do this quickly cuz chewing cage bars is bad 4 hamsters
after u buy the aquarium or hamster bin cage, dont forget 2 put a dog biscuit or a piece of chew toy in it 4 him 2 chew since there arent anymore bars 4 him 2 chew on
hope this helps

hi this is a very common hamster problem. hamsters need to chew things that are hard as their teeth are always growing. its part of their natural behavior to chew things to keep their teeth short. the bars on their cage are often used. i have one hamster who chews and one who doesnt. the door of their cage is often a area that they will chew and this may happen after they are returned to their cage after being out. if this is happening try using a different door to put them back in if theres 2. bar chewing is very annoying to listen to and a pain if you are trying to sleep! i have never heard of this causing a hamster any harm other than their nose rubbing on the bar above.

to stop them doing it you could move them to a tank style cage although my ham still chewed the bars on the top of the tank. some people cut strips of cardboard a few inches wide and thread it threw the bars to stop them. this only works on small areas of bars. you can also provide them with something else to chew on instead. mine love fruit branches. you can get these in the 'naturals' range of treats in the pet shops. also a mineral block may work.

my advice would be to thread cardboard strips threw the bars that are being chewed to block it up and put something very hard in the same place to encorage them to chew that instead. your local pet shop should have a block for chewing on.

good luck and i hope you get some peace and quiet!!!!!!!!!

He has loads of dog treats to chew on and pieces of wood. He jus chooses the bars instead! He chews in the bottom corner of his imac. The imac has 2 levels and an attic so he has enough space. I have tried threading paper towels through the bars but he pulls them in and rips them to shreds! I will try the cardboard though. It will take him abit longer with that!

I think the general concencus is that some hams will chew whatever you try. I think very rarely it can cause teeth problems as well as the obvious nose rub. If you have tried various chew sticks, logs, etc then maybe a tank style cage would be better if its causing you worry.

ok sounds like you have done all you can then realy. i have the imac cage. is it the imac fantasy you have with an extention? if so then your ham has plenty of space. does he use the wheel?? that takes up a lot of hammy time. maybe try putting him in a different room so he doesnt drive you bonkers as he is happy chewing. only thing i can think of to stop him is to change cage to a tank with a top that he cant reach. not very practical if you already have a good cage with plenty of space. i know so many people who have had noisy hams keeping them awake and bar chewing. i used to have to put mine in the bath overnight just so i could sleep! (in the cage!) x x

For some reason he dosn't use his wheel and its definatly big enough for him. I've managed to get hold of a tank for him, try him in that and see how it goes. I have 7 cages altogether 6 imacs and a roddy savic but that would be way too small for him! Thanks for the advice!
