Default Olaf sleeping behaviours?

Hi as most of you already know I have adopted a little baby boy Syrian called Olaf, I have provided him with a new and bigger home with new top notch wooden wheel, toys and a hut to sleep in - or so I thought. Last night he was desperately trying to get to the back of the hut so I moved it out just slightly. I have come down this morning and dismayed to find him curled up asleep at the back of the hut and no bedding with him, (he won't get cold we have the heating permanently set). But my concern is that is he comfy and why has he not used the hut where surely he must feel more safer and comfortable, what can I do to make him more comfortable. Has anyone else seen this kind of sleeping behaviour.

I wouldn't worry, he'll probably be making himself quite comfortable sleeping wherever he wants, some do seem to like sleeping in the open for some odd reason, as long as the hut is big enough for him if he chooses to use it & he has plenty of nesting material he should sort himself out as he settles in.

Lunar won't use his house at all even if its empty or stuffed with bedding, he prefers to kick up the substrate in the cage in to a corner then burrow in to that. Cindy and Sandy both use their own houses, so Lunar is the only odd one xD

What I find is those hamsters who sleep in the open never had places to hide in when at the pet shop, they adapt to sleeping in the open and once the behaviour is set it won't change. Those who had hiding places at the pet store are more inclined to use houses, they will always make a nest inside a house rather than do so in the open. Only time a house nester will make a nest outside of the house is when they have given birth, gives them more space for them to look after the pups.

Olaf is perfectly happy perhaps put some bedding in to the corner for him, then you can watch him make a nest out of it.

Hi the hut is definitely big enough, last night he was desperate to get to the back of it so I moved it out slightly, I have come home from work and he is curled up in the Corner at the back of the hut with a bit of bedding over the top of him. If that's his preferred place of sleep then that's fine by me, I think tonight when he awakens I will pop more bedding in for him, I want to make sure he is comfy and warm.

Thanks everyone

I have 2 hammy's, 1 male Bruno, and the other female Tibbles. They both have the exact same cages which provides a sleeping, bed area, Bruno doesn't use this he sleeps in a tube that was put there as a toy but obviously he prefers the tube. Whereas Tibbles has straight away taken to the bed area and is still asleep in there as I am writing this. If Olaf wasn't comfy and warm he wouldn't be sleeping there, Hamsters are smarter than we think. Don't worry too much, you could place a bit of toilet roll where he has been sleeping. I hope Olaf is settling in well and good luck

Did you place his old bedding in his new house?

I put some toilet paper next to his tube and he just moved it into his tube himself

I'm sure if your hammy wants the bedding he will move it himself though so don't worry too much

The bedding in his old cage was awful so I have had to put fresh in, I usually use wood shavings and shredded recycled paper I saw him stuffing his pouches with paper and taking back with him.

I know I probably shouldn't do this but I have decided he is more of an Ollie than a Olaf, so I have slightly altered his name it kinda suits him better.
