Question How to discourage nibbling?

Hai.
I've had my Winter White Dwarf hammy Dusty for just over 3 weeks now. And she seems to be obsessed with nibbling. It's great when it's her chew toy, but not when it's my palm! She's never made me draw blood, but it's quite irritating and sometimes kinda hurts. I want to know how to tell her that it's not OK to chow down on my hand without frightening or hurting her. Any suggestions?

Thankies, Amy

(P.S. I can tell she's nibbling and not biting as she has a good sniff and occasionally a lick before she sets her teeth in. Also, I wash my hands before and after handling Dusty so smelling like food is out of the question. It's baffled me )

Default Re: How to discourage nibbling?

This is not uncommon in dwarfs. They tend to nibble rather than sniff to find out about 'the world'. We say they are 'tasting you'. She will likely stop it once she is more settled and if she is not biting down I'd advise you keep on handling her but try and be calm and confident and not expect her to bite down. Try and not present anything she can sink her teeth in too and run her hand to hand towards the heel of your hand and not the more nip-able fingers.

Smile Re: How to discourage nibbling?

I let her do that, and it seemed to work! I let her run on my palms and arms and she didn't nibble there (it must just be my fingers she likes) so I'm pretty happy. I also gave her a tiny chunk of lowfat mild cheese (she adores the stuff ) and it seemed to encourage her to eat the treat and not me
