Not sure if this has been mentioned before but it is possible that your hamster has cage aggression, which means that she is very protective of her cage. Try to encourage her to get into her ball or a box and transfer her to a neutral area, such as the bathtab or the playpen and continue taming her there. She might be less aggressive there. Good luck!

Thank you all so much for the support, I know its a question that is asked all the time on forums but just having others say they experienced the same thing and it worked out fine has made me feel a lot better!

I'll try moving her into a noisier room and feed her through the cage for a while until she calms down a bit. Any tips on how to get her out to clean the cage eithout her freaking out?? because were still no where near the stage where I can put my hand inside her cage to get her and I've tried putting her ball/a box near the cage door for her to walk into but she just stay in her bed:/

Have you tried doing it while she's up & running around rather than in her bed & putting some treats or something tempting in the ball or box? Also put the ball into the cage rather than by the door. That might work!

Taming/Handling Tips:

Stuff their nesting material/bedding into your clothes before you place it in their cage. They will connect your smell to a safe and warm place which should help make taming and handling quicker and easier!

Once they have had 24hrs to settle down into their new home, you can start with hand feeding treats on a daily basis. I use sunflower seeds and Rice Krispies for daily treats, and fresh fruit & veg every couple of days. Talk to them slowly and quietly to begin with while they eat. This will get them used to your hand and voice, they will realize the hand is a good thing which will bring them nice things to eat! They should start to approach your hand! You can let your hammy sniff your fingers, if you have a nibbler like mine it's best to avoid fingers near their face to unless you have food. Show them the back of your hand to sniff instead!

Try gently stroking their back as they eat once they have gotten used to you, get them used to contact. If they are ok around your hand and approaching for treats you can guide them onto your hand using a treat!

Scoop your hamster up with both hands while inside the cage. Let them climb down when they want to! Do this regularly to get them used to being picked up, they know they can leave at any time so will feel comfortable and will start to trust you.

Once your hammy is comfortable with in-cage handling you can start cupping your hands around them, get them used to being held and not being able to climb away immediately. Once they are used to this you can start bringing them out of the cage for short periods on your lap or in a bathtub with you (No water!). Start with very short trips out and slowly increase it. It won't be long before your hamster will be begin to come out and play with you!

This is just a way which worked for me and taming my timid/nervous hamster, there are other methods so you might need to try a few ways before you get the right one. Every hamster is different and unique in their own way. I hope this will help you!

I agree with Tolennaki, I have a rescue Russian dwarf and I've had her about 2 months now, still can't even put my hand in her cage without being screeched at or bitten but I scoop her out with a card tube and as soon as she is out of her cage she is right as rain and is quite happy exploring my hands without biting them.

Just thought I'd update you all after all your kind suggestions and encouragement...
little Nessa and I were slowly progressing with the taming but she had a seizure a few nights ago ..she was lying on her back twitching and squeaking so I just spoke softly to her and sat it out. I then went back to p@h to see the vet there about what to do and how to help her and after only listening to her heart and checking her eyes/ears I was told she looked healthy and to take her home. Since then she has had another fit last night where the same thing happened and now she wont come out her bed. :'( i did try and film it for the vet but couldnt do it in time.
I dont want to take her back to the p@h vet because now i'm scared the vet there will say she needs to be put down. I've only had her 2 weeks but I don't think she's well at all and I'm now even more nervous around her!

Poor Nessa
I would've expected more from the P@H vet. I know that sometimes after a fit in humans they can appear perfectly fine. I would phone the vet up at P@H (don't go down there with Nessa unless he can give you some answers like what it coukd be and the casuse) Tell him she's had 2 fits and you need advice.

I've just checked on the website and there's a site called "Hamster Club Health" and there's a bit about "Clonic Seizures" and it describes what happened to Nessa.
Firstly, I just want to say well done on how you coped during it, by staying calm and being there it kept her calm. If you had panicked she would've sensed it and it could've made the seizure worse.
It also said that after a seizure it's best to keep the hamster in a one level cage to prevent any injuries should it happen again.
With that info, phone up the vet and ask him about it, if there's anything she can take for it.
I hope this helps.

Really sorry to hear about Nessa's fits, I can imagine how this must be for you. I would try to find another vet if you can & have her checked out again to see what they can suggest.
