I agree you were right to separate them, it sounds like they were really not getting along.

Next time you get a pair you know to research more and make sure you do all you can to reduce the risk of trouble but it won't hurt them to live alone now Chewy will adjust to life on her own in time and its better shes alone than badly injured.

Keeping same-sex pairs is actually pretty unnatural with hamsters In the wild any pairs or groups would always contain both genders. I feel its always worth giving hams a chance to live in same sex pairs or groups but its never the end of the world for them if it doesn't work out

You definitely did the right thing in separating them. My two dwarfs lived together for about two months until I decided to split them up, it killed me to see them fighting and unhappy and it made me sick with worry. I don't even think they cared that they'd been separated, they were much happier. Just tell yourself they did the right thing and that they're happier now
And as for pet shops, when I bought my pair the woman told me if they fought I should bring them back and swap them for another pair (like that was ever going to happen, they'd just throw them all back into the same cage and god knows what would happen).
Looking forward to seeing how the two get on with their taming now

Thank you for all your reassuring replies and advice! Chewy and Oreo are both so much happier now! I did a lot of research but somehow missed bonding a pair. I will only spot clean a bit at a time from now on. I'm attempting the litter training but so far one ignores it and the other kicks it everywhere. Now they are living apart should not share toys when out to play because of scents?
XRubyRosex - That's shocking to tell you to just switch them! I was surprised by some of the advice they gave us!

Good to hear they're both settling down happily now.
Some people find their hams are fine sharing toys in the playpen or wherever you put them for out of cage time, as it's not their territory in the way the cage is they may well be fine, some are more sensitive to the scent of another ham than others though so you may just need to try them out & see how it goes.
