I know we should never assume anything but I guess I did just assume they are dwarf hams. As they're syrians you really are lucky not to have any fights yet, good to hear that you will separate them, it does need doing asap.

Hello Beba85, and welcome to Hamster Central. Now that it is clear that your little hammies are Syrians, as the others have said, they need to be separated. So, it is good that you will be getting them separate cages. I know they have been getting along okay up until now, but that is because they are only 2 months old. When I bred hamsters, I separated them from Mama at 4 weeks old into two cages...one for boys and one for girls. They usually went to new homes between 6-8 weeks old. After 8 weeks old they are put into their own cages until they go to their forever homes. So your little ones are the exact age when they HAVE to be separated into their own cages. This is because they are growing up, hormones are beginning to be active in their bodies, and they get very territorial. So, it is time for them to leave each other.

Now, there is one other thing you should be aware of. It is not always so easy to sex hamsters when they are young. Time and time again, we here at Hamster Central see hamsters who were sold as girls suddenly growing testicles and, uh oh...this is a boy! Or, what was thought to be a boy by the person selling you the hamsters is really a girl. Since you have 3 and they have been living together all this time, if you are not 100% certain they are all the same sex, you could be in for a surprise litter. If you are not absolutely sure how to sex a hamster you can put them in a clear glass container and take a photo of the hammy from below. Do this with each one and post it. Folks here should be able to help sex them.

I am hoping they are all the same sex, because no one really wants to be surprised like that, and I look forward to seeing pictures of your furry crew.

I'm really surprised they managed to live together this long without serious injury. I really hope they're all males, the last thing Beba needs is hamster babies. lol!

Excellent advice from all and Dr McK has it sussed - your baby syrians grew up together but at 2 months they are adults and need their own homes. I might be able to help on the mice issue. We live in a rural area and sometimes get the odd mouse, so it was important to me that my hamster cage was mouseproof. If you have an aquarium, that will be fine as long as the mesh on the top is mouse mesh (6mm I believe). If you get cages you need to make sure the bars are no more than 7mm bar spacing. I bought the Savic Mickey 2XL for this reason - it's designed to keep mice in so will keep them out! It also has a really good door on the front.

It's lovely that you have 3 syrian siblings, and 3 tanks or cages will be quite a space issue thing maybe, but it needs doing to prevent injuries, deaths and expensive vet bills, asap! How big is your tank? It might be possible to partition it if it's big enough, while you are getting another tank or cage, although most tanks aren't big enough to do this. The main problem is, most cages with the smaller bar spacing aren't the cheaper ones, so as others have said you could make a big bin cage, but it if you are anything like me, the diy would take too long! The Alexander cage would be best (7mm bar spacing, 100cm cage) for a mouseproof syrian cage, but they are £69 each (my cage ranges between £65 and £80 on Amazon and is expensive at the moment, so the Alexander is a better deal). There are a couple of other cages/tanks with the smaller bar spacing, but nothing under £60 odd pounds, except the duna multy which Amazon are selling for £45 at the moment, but this isn't very high and wouldn't fit the height of a 12" wheel that syrians need really (people have had problems finding a big enough wheel to fit for a syrian).

Although it was mice that freaked them out they are already under stress and this could trigger them to start fighting and getting territorial now. And they will get territorial now they are adults, so please take on board what some of the experts on here have said - waiting to find out could mean nasty injuries.

It's tough and expensive, but it's the only thing to do. If you feel you haven't got space for 3 cages, 3 wheels, etc then maybe you could advertise one or two of them for adoption, but I think you'll still need cages meanwhile.

So - it looks like the options are: 2 Alexander cages at £69.90 each - which would be a good investment as it's a great cage and you wouldn't waste money upsizing the cage later (anything smaller than an 80cm cage will be too small for a Syrian). Or a couple of duna multys at £45 with 8" wheels in (minimum size for a syrian but might not be big enough depending on the size of the syrian) but that could be false economy as you may need a bigger cage or wheel at some point). Or a couple of large bins from ikea with mesh fitted into the lid (I believe people cut out the lid leaving the edge fastening part, and fix mesh in there for ventilation. Or similarly a couple more tanks, if you can find those cheaper, but they will also need mouseproof ventilated lids. Believe me mice can open things and smaller mice can squeeze through 8mm bars. 6mm is best but 7mm is the minimum.

To get rid of the mice I can recommend two options that work brilliantly for us, but both will also kill a hamster so only any good if the hamsters don't come out of their cages (ie can't get about in the room and are supervised and kept in an enclosed area), or if you take up the mousetraps before letting the hamster out each time (which could be forgotten on occasion).

The one that works best costs about £35 - it's a giant electronic rat trap - you smear chocolate spread inside at the far end and it zaps anything that goes inside, killing them instantly and therefore is quite humane - it can hold over 10 mice, but we find you tend to catch them in ones and twos. It's not dangerous to humans although would give you a nasty shock if you stuck your hand inside when it is switched on. The other ones we find work every time are below - a plastic unit with solid bait inside that dopes the mice instantly so they are put to sleep before they die so also quite humane and means the dead ones are easily found afterwards (usually either inside the trap or very near by) which is better than dead mice rotting behind bits of furniture or under floorboards!

This is the rat trap - it is excellent, it's for rats and mice - the only downside is the batteries are a pig to get in and it needs 6 big batteries I think.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pest-Stop-PS...words=rat+trap

These are the mouse traps, and the only ones we have found that work every time - with either option you put it along a skirting board, ideally along a route where you know the mice have been, but it tends to attract them anyway (nice smelling bait I guess and chocolate spread works every time in the rat trap).

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rentokil-PSF...rds=mouse+trap

We get the mouse traps locally but you can get them delivered next day with Amazon which would save traipsing around trying to find them. Has to be the Rentokil ones though - they are the only ones that seem to work.

Hope this helps. If you need any help finding cages, tanks etc, I am sure people on here would be happy to look out deals for you. If you have a tank already you might know where to get another cheapish one. Some people stack their cages or stack them on shelves to save space as well.
