Default Psycho behaviour

Aria is typically a reclusive hamster. Coming out only to take a drink of water and food. Coming out to play only after iI've gone to bed. However this afternoon was a different story.

Shorty after I got home she decided to attack her water bottle. I looked and there was Aspen everywhere. I took her out for a bit and she was hyper crazy in the tub. I placed her back in her bin and she attacked her water bottle, dug in her Aspen, chewed and climbed the mesh. All behavior I've never seen her display before.

Is this normal? There haven't been any changes or loud noises.

Hi Oatmeal_Cupcake. The first thing that comes to mind is...maybe her water bottle isn't working right? If the bottle is okay, do a check over of her whole body looking to see if there is anything that doesn't seem right. If everything looks okay, I'd just watch her for a day or so. Hamsters can sometimes have these outbursts with nothing we can see that can tell us what's going on. I hope she's okay and just in a mood.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I did check her water bottle and filled it up with more water. She went to drink some more and just kept being hyper. I've checked her body and she seemed alright. I'll give her another look over just in case I've missed something. I do hope it's just a random hyperactive outburst. It's just so odd because it's so unlike her.

At the moment she's in her ball rolling around just fine. :/

Don't they make you crazy? Whenever a hammy does something that is "odd" or "unlike" him or her, I sit up and take notice. It's always good to just monitor it for a while, and, most often, it turns out to be nothing. But I trust my instincts with my hams and just making it my business to watch them closer has caught problems before they get worse. Also, Aria is with you only a short time and I know losing Kit Kat was hard. So anything Aria does will make you anxious.

If you tap on the little ball in the end of the spout and don't see air bubbles rising regularly into the bottle then it could have a problem letting the water out. How old is she? Could she be in heat?

I had a problem with Archie's water bottle and the spout wasn't working properly, he alerted me to it by sucking the spout really loudly, fortunately I always keep a couple of spares.
I was wondering the same thing as BrainGirl about her being in heat.
Twinkle is a little crazy diva when she's in heat.

Oh yes! That's actually very wise advice! I'll be sure to do that from now on.

Thank you, it has been hard on and off. Aria has been a huge help. it is very true, I am trying to stay really alert with anything and everything. Perhaps this might be her coming out of her shell and being active. I'd really love that!

She seems to have settled down after running in her ball for a bit.

my Toby was attacking his bottle last a few days ago, I went and checked and the diy bottle holder I had the bottle in for some reason wasn't sitting right and no water was coming out, I was able to get velcro for it though and now it's working great again.

I'll try that out on the water bottle.

Not really sure of an age. I think she might be 4 or 5 months old? How can I tell if she's in heat other than stronger smelling pee?

Come to think of it, this isn't the first time she's had problems with her water bottle. I got her a second one the first time she was "attacking" her water bottle but she just "attacked" the second one. I have it attached to the bin cage with velcro. When she "attacks" it it seems like she's trying to pull it off the bin wall.

Thinking back on it I think she's been "attacking" it while I've been at work or asleep. I've noticed that her water level was dropping very quickly so I started measuring the water to record her water intake. Now that she's "attacking" the bottle again I've noticed that the water level is dropping at the same accelerated rate. She's not drinking it all, it's just dripping from when she's trying to pull the bottle of the wall.

I really don't know what solutions there could be for this. I don't trust her with a bowl at all. Is a glass bottle so she can't damage it. So far I haven't been woken up by the noise. I've thought of doing bottle stand but I'm thinking she might just knock it over. She's so strong!
