I think size and light plays a part. When mine had igloos, they would use or not use them. Now they all have large, dark homes and none have slept out in the open since.

When I got Nutmeg, she was around a year old and had never had a house. She refused to go in any house I tried and would only sleep out in the open. That is, until I got her a Bendy Bridge. She slowly investigated it and about a week later decided she liked it. She has slept every night since under the Bridge. She piles loads of bedding over the top of it and uses that as a shelf to sit on.

Almond has 3 houses and a few open spots. he takes turns which one he will use on any given day. I never know where he will be .

Ted E. is a house hamster and has been all his life. He found his bedroom as a baby and has slept there every single night since. He will take little naps behind his wheel in between bouts of wheel running and mad dashes throughtout his setup.

They are all different.
