I know this is an older post, but what kind of "litter" do you use in your hamsters potty boxes? I use Kaytee Clean and Fresh (with rose petals right now) for the containers with how light and fluffy it is, its awesome for burrowing. I was considering getting a small critter litter box or a small corner pan... but what should I put in the boxes? The small litter box comes with pellets, but I haven't seen any refill packs.

Other things may work, but those special pellets seem designed to smell like " a place I should pee' ...?
Once they find it, they seem to use it. If they ever plan on using it. Pook however thinks its a sandbath, and just digs in his, his potty spot is elsewhere, so I just remove and replace bedding there since he's so attached to the spot. He will on occasion fall in love with a spot on the second floor platform. No discernible order or reason, except that we can see him back up to the glass, lift his tail, and wee in our general direction.....

Those litter pellets never really seem to work for mine, one of them used to take them all out of the tray & put them in his nest, weird ham lol!
I find the chinchilla sand that I use for the sand bath the best thing to use, they seem to take to peeing in it really quick & it's easy to clean out, works out cheaper too.

I use litter pellets in corner litter trays, they both use them
It looks to me like volcanic rock, I'm pretty sure that's what it is, anyway the smaller shaped pieces made for hams worked out a little expensive so I buy the bigger bags with bigger pieces made for piggies and rabbits, it works out cheaper and my girls aren't fussy about the size lol

I use chinchilla sand, and like it because Pumpkin likes to turn around, scratch in it, and then pee. It clumps too, so it's easy to clean.
