Exclamation Help! Panicking hamster? ):

Help! My Syrian hamster is panicking in his new cage. I'm stressing out right now because he's stressing out. I'm sure he's not exploring the new cage as he's biting the cage bars.

This is my second attempt at moving Gyu into his new cage. He also acted this way the first time. He's frantically running around and biting the cage bars.

Should I let him do whatever he wants until he settles or do I move him back into his old cage?

*his old cage is too small for a Syrian.

Let him calm down. You too. Leave him alone for a while and let him settle in. Don't stay there and watch. Hamsters usually like the extra room, but it's new for Gyu. He needs a day or two to adapt to the change. ***deep breaths***

I think it will be fine, have you put some of his old substrate into the new cage? Keeping the set up of the cage as similar to the old one as possible might also help him to settle in. And hiding some nice treats in the new cage

DrKMcK, thank you so much for always helping me out! ;; He seems a bit more calm now as he's on his wheel. He still appears a bit wary of his surroundings, though. I hope it's normal and that he'll settle soon.

Peanut84, yes, I did. I rubbed some of his old substrate here and there, too. Thank you!

Also, his Wodent wheel has this sort of grating sound when he uses it. Is it safe for me to rub some Vaseline where the wheel meets the bar?

I'd scatter a good decent handful of old substrate as a minimum. People do oil wheels though I'm not sure if vaseline is the right choice....petroleum jelly? Ewww....

Since Wodent wheels have an exposed axle, I would suggest vegetable or olive oil instead of Vaseline, as the hamster might lick it off.

I usually use olive oil to oil wheels. Most hamsters don't like to lick it, but it's perfectly safe if they do.

Also, do you have plenty of places for your hamster to hide in the new cage? Lots of open space can be scary for some hamsters. Even putting in a few empty cardboard boxes, etc. can help.
