Re: Moving a new hamster together with old hamster
Very glad you are keeping them seperated. Are they pet shop hams? If so, they are very likely to be hybrids. Its a really bad thing to breed hybrids, to many bad traits and mutations, which is probably at least part of why its so hard to tame your male. Also keep in mind that breeding is super dangerous for the mom, especially at the very, very young age yours is, she's just barely a baby herself. Mom hamsters, even ones that have had litters before can possibly die or cull their litter. So, to sum it all up, its not a good idea to breed unless it has been researched extensively and you have two unrelated hamsters with pedigrees from breeders, and know what will come as a result of a litter. If you want to see more about breeding, I suggest you talk to Vectis Hamsters, they are very knowledgable.

Re: Moving a new hamster together with old hamster
@cowgirlskipper
Mine is definitely a pet shop ham. I think the new one is as well (a gift so I'll have to ask to make sure. Chances are though, it's a yes). She is so much more friendly in comparison so I guess I lucked out on that, haha!
I actually did wonder if it was even safe for a 3-month-old to have kids but the separation should take care of it. Still, I had no idea it was that risky! Given my very little experience regarding hamsters, I think I'll just leave it to the professionals It's a better situation than ending up with a litter I cannot properly take care of.

Re: Moving a new hamster together with old hamster
Yeah, it kinda varies a little bit, it ussually depends on if there is a more even mix, or a mostly on one side of the spectrum mix of the species. My first (petshop) ham was a little angel, never bit at all, and all of my hybrids since haven't been particularly friendly, but Humbug is coming along. ( named so because his previous owner said he was a grouchy little man!) I'm really glad you joined and made sure of the welfare of your hamsters before continuing though. As you can see, the people on here are super nice and won't rat you out or be mean, its the reason I keep coming back, long after other forums proved to not be so nice.

Re: Moving a new hamster together with old hamster
I'd definetly keep them separate - breeding is a minefield of potential issues (including hereditary disease being passed down to the pups) so its best to not breed without having done a ton of research first
