Help! Hamster makes puffing noises?
I have had Izzy for about a week and a half. She normally gets up around 11pm. I've noticed that when she does she makes these puffing noises like she's blowing out air. Like fft fft. They're really short. I don't know if she's just squeaking but it doesn't sound like that. Is she ok? She seems fine(no wet tail, or crusty eyes, energy level is high, she's eating and drinking). I don't know what to do. I've read other articles and there is no mention of this but I hamster sat someone else's chinese dwarf(what Izzy is) and their hamster made the same puffing noises. Is this normal for chinese dwarfs(or even hamsters in general)? Please help!

Re: Help! Hamster makes puffing noises?
I've never heard my chinese make a noise like that, as she seems otherwise healthy the only thing I can think of is maybe something in her bedding or substrate could be effecting her breathing.... only a guess though, what are you using?

Cypher-
I use paper bedding. The puffing doesn't seem to be affecting her breathing. It's like when she wakes up or does something she'll make little puffs. I thought maybe she was trying to communicate or show something?

lol! lorrapaw, could be, who knows with hamsters
Alicia, I'm no expert on Chinese, zeph is my first, but it doesn't sound like you should be worried as long as she's otherwise ok, sounds quite cute really!

Re: Help! Hamster makes puffing noises?
My syrian makes a similar noise! Usually two or three times a night I'll hear it, I've checked her breathing and found nothing wrong, and her bedding is paper based and almost dust free, so I'm pretty sure it's just normal hamster chatter some hamsters are more talkative than others, I think mine makes that noise when she's curious or slightly annoyed by something, but I'll probably never know for sure.

Re: Help! Hamster makes puffing noises?
Mine makes these noises too, it's normally 2 or 3 short *puft* noises followed by 1 very quiet and hardly audible chirpey sort of sound.
I notice it in the morning when I accidentally wake her while I'm changing her food and water and she does a little lap of the cage making that noise then another lap with no noise then back to her bed

Re: Help! Hamster makes puffing noises?
My girl did this yesterday. First time Ive heard it. It was only for about a second and spunded like air escaping a balloon, like a little puff of air. Then she did a shorter quieter one, like a sigh. She hardly ever makes a noise so it shocked me. She was fine last night, running around like a crazy ham so I have no idea what it was. She is a syrian

Re: Help! Hamster makes puffing noises?
Dennis-Sama is also making these noises, I have been watching him closely over the past few days and have noticed a pattern. That is, he only seems to make them when he is in a new environment or stressed and is checking things out. Its kind of like he is sniffing around?
I mean, I am certainly no expert in having being a hamster owner for exactly.... 5 days I a merely interpreting the patterns.
