Worried New hamster owner
Hello,
Today I picked up a Syrian from PetsAtHome and put her in her new converted viv
You can see here
She keeps going on her wheel and then trying to open the door by scratching a biting. Do you think it's because she is nevous or because of the cage?
Video of her in the act

I currently have to robos which have never done this so I'm worried.

Re: Worried New hamster owner
Every Syrian I have gotten has run frantically in their wheel the first night, I think that is nerves. I wouldn't worry about the biting at the door or corners, they just always want out and will try to see if their is a way to break out in any new home. Don't worry she will calm down in a day or so I'm sure

It's completely normal Dave. It's all new to her and she isn't sure about what's happening. She will calm down over time. Give her a couple of days to settle in and make it her own. Only feed and water her, talking softly and not trying to hamdle her just yet. Once she settles in you can start to tame her.

Thanks for the advice. I tried turning off the lights and it seemed to calm her down as well.
She's been asleep all day so hopefully she's starting to settle.

Re: Worried New hamster owner
I just got a Syrian too and she was up all night running and digging along the edges of her tank. I was worried she would get so nervous and stressed she'd get wet tail, but she was calmer by morning and has been greatly improving since. Now just a few days later she's halfway tame and seems to have no qualms about anything.

Looks like she knows where the door opens and is trying to open it. Do you have a viv lock on the door. I had to have one on my viv as the beardie could open it. Great to have a viv though. Are you putting red led's in.

Ian how would you put red leds in without causing a hazard to the ham? Its something id like to do with my viv but with 3 solid sides it would have to go inside the cage and i cant think how? Would love to do it tho if pos

Re: Worried New hamster owner
My syrian finds the crack under my front door fascinating when she's in her ball. She'll sit and scratch to get out forever if I don't hear her and move her away. I think they can just tell there's almost an escape route and need to try and get through it.
Your little girl is adorable though and her viv looks really cool
