How to train/know when a hamster wants to come out of the cage?
How do I know if my hamster is in the mood for coming out, or how do I train her to let me know? Thanks.

Muddle comes to one part of his cage door and sits, others do other things to get attention. The easiest answer is to always get your hamster out at roughly the same time each day though - like our Nelly was waiting for us at 11pm last night because he knows its playtime

I agree with Kryll, mine have learned my schedule (when I go in the room for playtime) and once they get used to that, they make it pretty obvious they are ready for playtime. I don't know if dwarfs behave in this way, but my Syrians pace around their tank/bin trying to get my attention. It helps to give them something to look forward to when you take them out, such as a play area, ball (if they like it), or treats when held.

My Syrian girl lets me know by climbing the bars and waiting by her door ( her cage has a side entrance ). I didn't teach her as such but she generally hears me sorting out the food around 9pm each night which wakes her up lol :,) and then she knows that once she's grabbed a bite to eat she will come out to play!

Heh, hams generally make it clear when they want something...And the opposite is true. If I can coax Ziggy out, and he's not into it? He will try and open the doors to go back into the cage.....to come out, he runs around where I can see him, often in front of the door I take him out from. He may even try chewing the door a bit. Or, he goes to the carrying pod on top of the cage, the penthouse, which he can open if I leave it unlatched. It's loud enough I can hear him come out of it....

It sometimes takes a while for them to learn your schedule. Java, who we have had since March, wakes up around 8pm. It tends to be when we feed and weigh everyone. Biscotti is usually awake then, but won't come out of his house and just grooms until a few hours later.
