I saw that video! I wouldn't freak my boy out the way they did. They just kept doing it over and over.

I've heard of screaming hamsters, and hissing, but none of mine have ever done that. Apparently torts are quite naughty and can be very vocal... so maybe we'll have some shreakers in our future?

You'll have to let me know for sure. lol Oliver walked into the cup tonight with no hissing. I think he's more likely to do it when he's sleepy.

I absolutely hate videos where people do something to frighten any animal on purpose! When hamsters hiss, roll over with their mouths open or scream, they are afraid. After the fact, when a hammy has scared me to death with a loud screech, it's funny to relate the story. But people like that person making the spray noise, which is very similar to another hammy's hiss, over and over, is just plain wrong. I saw another video with a hammy whose owner thought it was funny to make it "play dead" by scaring it and another where the poor dwarf hammy was screaming again and again. Why people do this, I have no idea. If you've ever noticed, if you wake an adult hammy, before it's fully awake, it will usually have it's bottom lip drawn back, baring the bottom teeth. That's a clear signal that it will bite if you try to touch it. Once it wakes up fully, it stops doing that. Their body language and sounds do tell us how they feel if we pay attention to it.

Very true! Aside from Oliver, I don't have any other hamsters that get upset when I wake them. I've only had to do it on occasion when a visitor wants to see them, or with Gizmo, I have to wake him up every morning for antibiotics. He takes it half asleep and goes back to bed. lol

I wish Ziggy would hiss. Anything. Anything but the godawful silent treatment! He doesn't even pee on me!

Maybe they get it from my hedgehog....that thing was born around people, raised around people, but if you try to touch him the first 10 minutes he just stares and hisses at you. *sigh*

LOLOLOL . Skeever, if Ziggy hissed at you, they'd probably be peeling you off the ceiling! The first time it happened to me I dropped the baby ham. Thankfully the baby was only about 1/4" off the bedding at the time.
