Boy/Girl, is there any difference in behaviour or nature?
As a newbie to hamsters, I just wanted to ask this

Maybe it's just imagination but we a have always found males to be sightly more outgoing. Sometimes if you know an animal is male or female you will mentally give it male or female characteristics whether they are there or not! Females definatly have an odour when they are in season every fourth night and tend to be more 'nesty' and busy keeping their cage stocked up that the males who like to race on the wheel trying to get to a female. If you only have one you will not notice this.

I find my girls are better at using their toilets than males but it could just be coincidence... Personally I prefer females and am not too keen on males with very large scrotums I do find a preference for males from adoptees though which is fortunate as I tend to have on average far more male than female pups. Men do seem to have less attitude and are more laid back again this may be coincidence though and related to the particular temperment of my males which transfers to their offspring.

thank you this is what I was wondering, I had heard males were suppposed to be more laid back, this may well be why more people take a male.

The only difference that I've noticed really is that my girls have always kept their cages tidier than the boys!!! The in-season odour that people talk about has never been a problem for me, yes it's sometimes that you can smell it but it's never been strong or unpleasant. I have found sometimes when girls get older they have a similar smell about them all the time, but again it's not been a huge problem.
I've only had girl syrians for a good while now though.

our male Syrian Si seems to think he has the ability to fly more than the two girls do, but I think it's just a quirk of his character. He does not feel a hamster should have to wait when running hand to hand
