New Hamster Worries
well on Thursday i went to Pets at home and got a male syrian called Monty, my cousin got his littermate and she says he is really active, climbing about the bars and everything. Monty is really quiet and if i make a little noise he just freezes for like 5 mins. he also isnt nesting, i have put a hut in with Carefresh natural bedding in it but he isnt bothered, he is just sleeping behind his wheel and not even trying to make a nest, there is enough bedding in the cage, about an inch.
I dont know if he is just settling in or what.
(By the way today is now Saturday)
And i have also had one syrian before, Danni (R.I.P) and a robo dwarf, Titch (R.I.P)

Re: New Hamster Worries
Have you tried covering his hutch with a blanket and putting lots of ripped up toilet roll in? Maybe he's just a bit overwhelmed? I'm new to this myself, I only got Freya on Tues.

Re: New Hamster Worries
just keep all the noise out, maybe put a blanket ontop half of the cage, and maybe just talk to him if he is new he may be scared because it is new for him or like CPalmer said he may be overwhelmed but you aere doing everything ok

Re: New Hamster Worries
Some hamsters take longer to settle in. Just take everything slowly.

Re: New Hamster Worries
Might just be a little scared like mine. I got casper from pets at home and he was very jumpy and hiding alot. Hes a little better now a month later. Give him some treats and a couple of bedding areas to choose from. Im still trying with mine and with the taming, just takes a little time to settle.

Yea, I agree with woodie. Hamsters from p@h don't get handled much. He is probably just scared.

Re: New Hamster Worries
Just because hamsters are related doesn't mean they will act the same. Out of my litter of 7, each was different from the other. One family took two and the girl was in your face wanting to be out and playing and the boy was so reserved he only came out to eat. He would let you pick him up just fine, he just wasn't interested in initiating it.

Re: New Hamster Worries
sounds to me like he is just settling in still, give him lots of places to hide, take it easy round his cage and help him settle - am sure he will come out of his shell, or perhaps he'll just be mega chilled like my hamster Axel Rose was.

Re: New Hamster Worries
hey, thx for all the help. i bought these bendy sticks from pets at home and made them into a hut and i put it in the corner of his cage with lots of ripped up tissue inside and within 10 min he was out of behind his wheel and snuggled up in there.
I was also talking to him alot last night and he seems more comfortable with me being around him so i think he was just a bit scared.
