I think I have her twin

My little 'darling' chewed a massive hole in the base of her Alexander and ended up in the lounge wall for 3 days. The problem I found was that no matter how I patched it up and blocked it off, she knew it was there and she is nothing if not determined! She seems to have mellowed a bit with age though and has made no attempt to chew the base of her new cage which she has had for about 6 months now.

I think a glass tank would be the best option in your case though

I'm having the same problem, my rescue Ivy has gone from chewing the bars to chewing out of her cages.

So far she has chewed out of 2. I'm now wondering what I can put her in. I can't find a decent priced tank big enough and I can't fit the Detolf in the space I have.

Would a Viv be an ok alternative? I'm really struggling to find a decent option.

Please keep us updated if you have any luck

I'm sure there are people here on HC that keep there hammies in vivariums, have a look in the "let's see your cages" thread or just search "vivariums and I'm sure you will see some pics of wonderful setups!

Thanks to all of you for your responses! I moved her into the glass tank last night. I'm not completely happy as it is smaller than her old cage. Not by much but its shorter and narrower! In better news thoigh, best nights sleep in months! I still like the idea of the deltof.. im just not convinced she wont somehow make it out of the wooden ends and I dont want to cause her any more stress / waste anymore money!

This glass tank will do for a couple of weeks whilst I do some more research on the detolf!!

Could you get some wire mesh... the kind people use to prevent escapes from ZooZones etc, and staple it over the wooden ends on the detolf? I'm sure I saw someone suggest that somewhere. Then there's no chance of chewing through.

I was just about to say, we don't trust one of our syrians at all so we stapled mesh to the inside ends of her detolf
Then we made her lid carefully too so all she has access to is the glass or wire mesh. She can't chew through the mesh to get at the wood of the ends (or of the lid) so she's completely safe in there. The biggest issue we have is that she tries to push the lid off instead but we've found ways to keep it secure

Eggbiscuit (the ham in question) has to make do with chewing boxes and wooden things to shreds instead now, whether she likes it or not (and I dont think she does like it) she is definetly never going to chew out of her detolf

Or i might try the mesh idea with the zoozone! it looks a little unslightly at the mo! unfortunate as it was a great cage for previous hamsters! Im sure these females are more trouble than males.
