Toilet Training
I got my Syrian, Miley-Grace, about a week ago and she has made her bed in the tubes on her cage. I'm okay with this apart from the fact that she has also made her toilet in the flat tube. I have been to the local pet store and they gave me some potty litter thing but I would like some advice as to how to stop her from going to the bathroom in the tube as it is such an inconvenience. Please help!

Re: Toilet Training
She shouldn't really have tube in the beginning as it takes hard for taming and as you already found out isn't very hygienic. Until she completely settles in I'd take out tubes and hopefully she will establish appropriate corners for her toilet and sleep and food storing etc. you might want to look up here for cage set up inspiration. Let's see your cages (from January 2013)

Re: Toilet Training
If you can't remove the tubes then rub some bedding into the area where she's going to the toilet and put it in the potty, make sure it's in a corner and one which isn't already in use for food etc. Clean the tubes out and then she may take the hint. It often can take time though.

Re: Toilet Training
I'm glad I bumped into this thread, I've recently got a new LH syrian, he tends to pull some of his bedding into the corner of his cage and pee on it, I've left it there for the time being to let him settle in, but should I move that onto a potty too, and he'll keep going there?

Re: Toilet Training
Not sure what to do with the tubes but removing them would be the best idea, if they can be removed that is.
I use large jam jars for my hybrid dwarf hamsters as there toilet areas, so I tend to place them in a clear corner of the cage and put some of there wet woodshavings from where I first find there pee corner into the jar and within a few days they seem to cling on that there toilet area is there. Make sure to clean the remaining wet bedding/shavings after doing that though so there is no confusion as to which of the two place they need to go.
Your going to need something bigger then a jam jar though if you was going to use something like that, with your hammie being a Syrian. Maybe try this technique and see if she decides to stop going in the tubes. If not, then maybe try blocking off the tubes so she cant access them or try keep cleaning them out often so that no smells are left over.
Hope this may help!
