Default Marvin

Marvin the aggressive hamster. I'm not sure if you remember me mentioning him. He's the one who ended up with tumour, I adopted him and I had this huge problem with vets etc etc. anyway, that's under the health section somewhere if you wanna read it.

Anyway.. this so called 'aggressive' hamster had never bitten me until he came back from a week at the vets (after I had only owned him a week, well, 2 total) and now he is the most aggressive thing EVER. He's a Russian and he will bite and not let go and when I eventually pry him off me he'll bite again. The blood will be running down my arm so this isn't a warning nip. I'd happily just leave him to run in his cage but he sits and looks at me because he wants to come out to play. One second he'll be all happy running about and then without a single trigger (as far as I'm aware) he'll 'attack'. Now, I'm wondering if he could be in pain because of his tumour because it's pretty hard to check the growth.

I promised him a forever home when I adopted him but I'm wondering am I really doing what's best for him keeping him when I cant check him properly? It would kill me to give him away but he's been back from the vets for a couple of weeks now and I've spent so long trying to tame him and nothing is working. My hands are always clean so it isn't smells or anything that is setting him off.

My mother suggested taking him back to Pets at Home but, unless you think that would be best for him, would break my heart. I only bought him, my second hamster, because he had been in the adoption centre 3 months and I wanted to give him somewhere to live forever. Any advice on taming him/what's best for him would be appreciated. I now know why the staff were terrified of him.

He is not going to be any different to anyone else i.e. he will still bite. At least when he is with you - you care about him and want the best for him. I would keep him with you. He must be in pain as you say. If he wants to come out to play - put him in his ball for short periods of time and put him back in his cage for a rest. Try to handle him with a flannel or something so that he does not nip you. The fact that he wants to come out to play shows his trust in you. Hope you will keep your baby and in time he will settle xx

I too think you should keep him, he won't be better cared for anywhere else than with you as you clearly care about him a lot and want the best for him. Can you let him into his ball direct from the cage without picking him up? This would be good playtime and would allow you to move him direct from cage to playpen/box etc for extra stimulus playtime without the need to handle him. You can continue to talk to him so he knows your voice, and maybe after a long time of no hands forcing him to do do anything he will learn to trust again. Poor little mite must be so traumatised You did the right thing adopting the poor baby.
