I am trying to tame my new syrian chalky, and was making good progress with him eating and sitting comfortably on my hand in the cage. He was really gently nipping me, and I thought he was just sussing me out. But he then gave me a bite on my middle finger, one that drew blood. I was just wondering if I have done something wrong or is he just over zealous?
He may just be feeling stressed and worried. Make sure you wash your hands before handling him...maybe he smelled something on your hands? My Ted E was scary enough that it took me over a month before he tamed. Now he's a nut for coming out to play. Just back off a bit and give him more time. Block off an area he can play in, or use the bathtub. You want him to be near you, and on you, but with little access to your hands and fingers. Do this until he starts asking to come out; peering out at the door to his cage . It will happen
Thank you, I will try that he did seem keen to come out, he was walking up my arm (which was in the door) and seemed to be comfortable until he did that..maybe I didn't wash my hands well enough after handling the guinea, so I'll try making sure they are fully clean. Other than that one time he is a darling and really friendly, he responds to his name and sits on the bars next to me while I talk to him
