In usual cases biting of the cage is merleyfor bordom but some do like the taste. You can simply put vegetable oil on the cage if he is not a show hamster, and only if its in a small spot. Im not too sure why he is behaving this way but my best bet would be to talk to a vet.

I'll go with Polar's earlier post and say have a look at his teeth. The easiest way to do this is wake him whereupon he should yawn and you can have a quick look inside his mouth. If they're curly he needs to gnaw to wear them down which is what he's doing. Far and away the best gnawing tool is a Johnson's Fruity Stick if a little sugary and fattening but it's almost addictive. Also examine his feed and make sure he's getting some harder biscuits or add a little all-in-one feed.

Gnawing can be a sign of boredom so try this. Get a new toy, remove all the other toys he's used to and put the new toy in the cage. Then change the toy for a different one every week.

Regarding the problem of noise at night, don't keep the hamster in the same room where you sleep. There's really no other remedy!

I think that the moving around in a short period of time may have made him a little territorial and putting the wheel in and out can upset a ham. As long as there are no drafts the floor might work. My Teddy is only with me for about 3 1/2 weeks now and he made a racket on every wheel I tried because he's really fast. I finally settled on the Wodent Wheel and I oil it with olive oil. Not a sound. I notice that Ted E. flings himself at the wheel, something my Patches never does. It makes his feet make noise. I also made sure that the bedding is under the wheel stand, not on the floor of the cage. It muffles any noise. Hope you find a solution.
