How to encourage chewing?
A while ago I took Minnie for her teeth trimming as the top ones were gettng too long, and since then, a friend has been trimming them for me every now and again. However he's getting reluctant to keep doing it, as he says the teeth get brittle after regular trimming and he doesn't want her teeth to break.
So, I was wondering what else I can do to encourage her to wear them down on her own? She has plenty of wooden things to chew on in her cage, including apple wood sticks, dog biscuits and a salt/mineral block, but her top teeth don't seem to be wearing down.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: How to encourage chewing?
I rubbed rasins on apple wood sticks to get my chinchillas to start chewing, bit she'd proabbly just lick that off like the peanut butter. How about a walnut with a small hole in it, so she has to chew at it to get at the nut inside?

I solved the problems of the hamily here with DentaStix. Some are "extra flavored". Also, I have given them those dried corn... HUGE hit here !

That's exactly my clever little Syrian girl done! so after all kinds of trick I've finally solved the problem by getting tooth brush shaped dog dental chew from p@h (mine seem to like white colours) then I put little sunflower seeds between brushes. So in order to get seeds she was forced to chew and finally get the taste of it. Now she chews dental sticks willingly

Re: How to encourage chewing?
Hmm if they are licking it off maybe you are using too much/not rubbing it in enough. I really have to rub it into my ham's chews, sometimes I let it dry for a little bit before putting it back in the cage.
Dentastix sound like something I want to try with my ham though, keep his teeth clean n all!
I find the dried corn something my ham ignores, he likes anything fruit flavoured. We have found he will even try to chew something with flamin' hot monster munch flavouring on it (e.g. fingers!) but I stopped him doing that because I doubt it's good for him XD.
Get creative with fruit flavours, my ham likes fruit flavoured chews (p@h has small chewable blocks which are perfect).

Rub fruit over the toys? The juice'd sink in but it might get a bit yukky after a bit

I have considered that myself, rubbing or dipping blocks then letting it dry and putting them in his cage.

Re: How to encourage chewing?
My staple diet for my hams has dried corn in it and I can hear thm chewing on it all night long xD however, they won't touch the wooden chew sticks. I'll have to try rubbing some peanut butter on it
