Default Help with socialising my hamster

Hi all.

I've had Perry for nearly 9 months now. When I first got him, I didn't handle him at all. When he was around 3 months old, he was comfortable enough to be handled slightly and would sit on my lap, etc. However, he wasn't happy about being handled.

One day, I went to pick him up and he bit me quite hard. Maybe I had the smell of food on my hand etc, but it scared me, and upset me quite a lot because I felt like he didn't like me. (I know that sounds silly).

Unfortunately, because of that, I haven't handled him properly for about 4 months now. I interact with him but I'm scared that because he hasn't been handled in so long he won't want to be handled again, or he will bite me again.

It's really upsetting me, because I want to be able to handle him and at the minute it's not like he's a pet.

I realise it's my fault for being too scared to handle him, but does anyone have any advice?

Thanks

Bird

scoop him up, and sit in an empty bath tub with him, so he can run around safely and get used to your smell

Sometimes hamsters are scared when you try to get them out of their cage. I agree with sitting in the bathtub with him but try and scoop him out of his cage inside something so you dont have to touch him. He may settle down in the tub and you can enjoy time with him even if he just climbs on you and you dont touch him

If you're worried he will bite you trying to get him out, use something like a coffee jar and allow them to walk in
